How do I know what year the bike is? Cannondale

Someone in my neighborhood was tossing a bike. I knew Cannondale was a top of the line bike and the frame, forks, and handle bars are in really good condition so I took it home to restore. But I don't know what year it is so I can start ordering parts and restore it. It's a Cannondale SR400. One of the stickers says Aluminum but that's it. Looks like stock paint and it's red.

Hello and welcome to the forums. You don't really need to know the year to order parts, just the brand and model of some of the components.

The date is part of serial number but I am not sure just what numbers. I believe the SR4 was the base model and it might have Suntour parts?

Pics are a big help in identifying bikes.

A quick perusal of C-dale catalogs shows that it might be an '89 SR400 in red:

The serial number should be on one of the stays. The model year is called out in the serial

Vintage Cannondale ? Serial Numbers & Information | VintageCannondale.com

SN#56020588132 indicates a 56 cm frame, built on February 5, 1988, #132
SN#51803920847 indicates a 135mm dropout, 18” frame, built in March 1992

Cannondale's serial number format changed a few times over the years but here's allthe information you need to determine the build date.

Be aware that bicycles made in the last quarter of the calendar year may be for the upcoming model year. In such cases the actual model year can usually be determined by looking at the two appropriate catalogues.

Edit: looks like 9volt was posting while I was composing. My apologies for the duplication.

Can someone figure out mine? I looked all over my bike for size or year but there were only stickers on the back of the crank.
Most sites I see help you identify vintage Cannondale bikes or to the years 2001-2002. Mine was purchased last year in 2018. I didn't ask when it was made because I don't usually care for these things. But if someone can tell me what size and year it is, I could write it down somewhere so one day when I sell it, I can tell the buyer the information. I would also like to know myself if it is not too much trouble. Thank you sincerely in advance! Serial : A6J5023434
It better not be the serial number for the crank...that would be...embarrassing! Haha!

For modern Cannondales, the serial number is located on a sticker on the underside of the bottom bracket shell, not the crank:
