Fuji Espree

A gal has this bike listed for $50. It's a 21" (it fits) Fuji Espree. I don't know alot about these bikes and I am wondering if this is worth it for something to kick around the city with. Anything specific I should be aware of?

Sorry - It does not appear that I am yet allowed to post URLs and according to her "This is the best picture she has"

I believe the serial # is FC405364. Is there a good resource for "reading" Fuji serial numbers?

It's not a high end Fuji, but very respectable at $50. Positives: Quick Release hubs front and back, aluminum rimmed wheels, down tube shifters vs stem shifters (those are Suntour ratcheting friction which work great). Most likely it uses a Suntour V or 7 series derailleur set which work just fine too. Appears to be in nice shape and I'd say a bargain for an around town bike as it will probably weigh in at around 26 lbs.

If I saw it locally I'd grab it, but Fuji's have a special place in my heart.

BTW, all the catalogs are here: Catalog_Covers

Check out the 1984 catalog. That one indicates the Suntour ARX derailleurs which also work great. Nice triple-butted tubing too. The wheels are worth $50 alone.

Don, thank you for your well-informed reply! I think judging by the serial number it would be an '83 in the grey- looks like they upgraded the tubing to the triple butted for the 84 and the 83 has the butted Valite tubing.

Often a bike manufactured in late '83 would be an '84 model, which this is. The '83 had stem shifters, and this has the correct for '84 down tube mounted Suntour PDL-M Power Shifters.

The only thing I can see wrong with it is the angle of the stem. Bring a 6mm hex key with you when you buy it!

I'd grab that pretty quick for $50. (Unless there was something seriously wrong with it).

This thing is almost mint. Original tires look brand new. She said her Husband purchased it in 1984 and literally never rode it. She gave me the original purchase receipt and owner's manual. Unfortunately the decals are scraped on the non drive side, but other than that it is in perfect condition! Fits great. Couldn't be happier.
