Kuwahara XTransition

Just picked this up yesterday. I liked the look and feel of it -- it's my first vintage bike. The odd thing is how close the front wheel is to my feet (short wheelbase is the term I think?). When I U-turn, it can easily hit my foot. Despite that, I loved the responsive feel to it. Anyway, wondering what it's estimated at around here?

These are the specs:
Ishiwata EXO quadruple butted tubing
Shimano STI shifters
Aluminum alloy stem, seatpost and rims
Exage LX 500 group
Cateye micro cc-6000 (works!)
IRC cross country 700x35 tires (like new)

There's just minor cosmetic damage to the bike. It clearly wasn't used very much. I'd like to post a picture or two but my post count prevents me.

Some pics and your location would really help I'm pretty sure this is a none US model cross bike from the 90's so it will be real hard to price without this info.

I'm in Canada. I can't post urls unfortunately. Is this allowed? imgur[dot]com/PpVkbYM.jpg

Looks to be a very nice basic 90's cross bike the LX stuff is great funcational and it looks to be in good shape. I would put the value at $175 US and 250 CAD in a major market.

Nice looker. I'd pedal that. Hmmm, I wonder what it would look like with a milk crate on the back :foo:

Thanks zukahn1 for your help! I got it for $170 CAD. Sounds like I did a good thing jumping on this. Only thing that's really beat up on the bike are the pedals, and I have a brand new set that I wasn't using at home anyway. :)

I actually have a black one. Good idea, I'll install it once I have a rack! :D

Nice thing is it has mounting points for fenders and rack as well as pump. As for pedals you can pic up some fairly nice sealed bearing studded platforms new for $15-20 shipped off ebay or aliexpress.

What's the reasoning behind getting such pedals? Is it just to complete the look or there is an advantage to them?

The advantage is your feet will less likely slip off them. The plastic pedals you have now are not that great of quality. Plus if you decide to ride that bike in those Montreal winters, your Sorels will have better grip on studded pedals and the sealed bearings will help keep out the slush and salt.

There very smooth and grippy compared to most vintage stuff and fairly cheap performance upgrade for a part that needs to be replaced. Nice modern pedals and tires are about he best bang for your buck upgrades replacements you can put on a vintage bike and they should be replaced upgraded on nearly any used bike you buy.

That brings me to ask, before taking the jump... I have a secondary carbon race bike with SPD Click'r pedals/mtb clipless shoes. Shoes are very comfy. Is there any sense in installing some kind of hybrid pedal similar to those which would allow me to use these same shoes with this bike as well?

zukahn1 08-11-17 09:04 AM

If that's what your comfy with great SPD's work just fine a bike like this.
