Unknown 70s Schwinn

This is up on Craigslist here in Buffalo and I'm intrigued. It was pulled out of storage but looks from the photos to be completely or mostly rust free, though obviously dusty and dirty.

Any idea of the model and its value?

Looks like a Continental to me. Regardless, given condition and neglect, $25. And that's if you have the time/tools/aptitude/pile of parts in hand.

If someone gave me that bike for free, I'd take it straight to the co-op where a volunteer mechanic with free parts could get it back on the road. Since I do not enjoy free parts, I would be upside down on it by the time I was done (if it was free).

This ones not free so it would be a heck no (or something like it).

I actually got a very similar bike two days ago. Paid $10 for it and took it to the co-op.
In that era there were only a couple decent Schwinn's: Paramount, Sports Tourer/Superior and the Super Sport. OK the imported World Voyageur was great too. (Note, the Sports Tourer is the early 1970s version. The1980s Sports Tourer was a totally different bike, not nearly as nice.)

The Super sport if it has original Brooks saddle, would be worth $150. The other models I mentioned would be higher, topped by the Paramount at over $1000. But 99% of the Schwinn's from that era are not these good ones.

Yeah, I'm with Bill on that. I might take it if it was free, but I would not spend anything on it.

I live in Rochester about an hour east of buffalo. I've seen that on craigslist too. You can tell its electroforged by the joint between the seat tube and seat stays. Most likely a Continental by the chrome fork, as others have pointed out.

The price is straight up nonsense. If I was in the market for a brown continental I might pay 15 dollars for it. Wouldn't go any higher. Another one in better shape at a realistic price is sure to pop up. Theres literally 50 million of them out there.

Yea, it's tough to compare, but the market in Buffalo seems pretty crap. Folks selling bikes seem to fall into 3 categories. 1. Walmart bikes being sold for $5 less than they were bought for 3 summers ago, 2. Decent bikes less than 10 years old whose owners feel entitled to get the full value they paid for it in 2008, 3. Vintage bikes with insane prices because the owner thinks that if it's more than 20 years old it must be super classic and rare because that's what they saw on American Pickers.

I often browse the Rochester craigslist as a good bike would be worth the hour drive, and the market seems to be a bit better.

There were a couple of ads on Rochester craigslist that even referenced the show. They would say things like "pickers welcome" or "one just like this that sold on american pickers for one million dollars." It's always old junk.

I do like that show, I even went to there store in Nashville. Danny D wasn't there though.. bummer.
But I agree it can be annoying looking at inflated prices on junk.

Good deals do pop up though. Just keep checking. Actually, the first vintage bike I bought off craigslist was an old Schwinn continental. Turned it into a single speed and has since been hooked on this whole C&V thing.
