Post Your Craigslist Near Misses

Saw an ad for this De Bernardi on the local Craigslist recently for $100:

Wheels / tires and stem are hideous of course, but that frame looks like a beauty (other than the paint job, IMO). Made in Italy, as you may have guessed. With Campy components too.

Bike was gone within an hour naturally, but I was second in line, if the first guy coming to look at it didn't want it. He did of course ...

I did some research on De Bernardi, and supposedly they built bikes for Colnago and other companies. I had never heard of them. From what I read, professional riders used to buy De Bernardi's frames and have them custom painted to match the colors of the sponsored team bike they were supposed to be riding. That tells me that these were some pretty special frames, but until I see another ad like this, I will never know first hand.

...I drove two hours each way to buy a 23" 1950's Paramount in pristine condition once. By the time I got there it had shrunk to a 21" frame.

The two hour return trip seemed to take a lot longer, for some reason.

What a touchy subject. I missed a Coors Light colors Dura Ace Serotta one morning for 100.00. I think it was missing the handlebars only. If I remember right, the lady said it was her ex's. I emailed at about 8AM Sat morning and she said I missed it by 10min.

I also missed a Trek 620 one afternoon, the guy said I just missed it. Something like 75.00

Last winter I was set up to buy a De Rosa from a guy 2 hours away for $500. We set up a meet time but then a big snowstorm, the only one of the winter, came through and I couldn't make it. When I tried to set up a re-do he said he changed his mind about selling. All worked out fine as I ended up with a different one this summer.

DeBernardi is a quality builder. That is one of my CL success stories. I bought one at a nice price last year, equipped with a Campy group and nice wheels. When I got it home, also had the pleasant surprise of finding it equipped with a Record titanium post. The components went on my Ciöcc. I resold the frame and fork at a fair price to a BF'er, who has been very happy with it.

Colnago Super, full Campy panto, very good rider condition, factory accessories, bottles, bags, team club jersey and shorts, ads, articles and literature. Something about Olympic farm team/club in NY I think, maybe an 84, unusual dark blue. Drug my feet a little, then the guy wouldn't give me a straight answer whether it was sold or not, he had put or let google put his addy in the listing, showed up on his doorstep and he still stammered that it was sold.

Local DKO flipper doesn't know the difference between a POS and something special. He sells everything for $65 to $75. Most of it consists of $25 bikes. But occasionally he finds something good, still prices it at $75. I've picked up several from him, but I was second in line for a Chicago Paramount that he, you guessed it, priced at $75............ By far, the best bike he has ever had.

I have a De Bernardi that I picked up used. Put a nice 5700 10-s 105 group on it, some solid older CXP-33 wheels/105 hubs and some other decent parts. Wasn't riding it enough, so it's not my wife's main road bike. Go figure, we're the same size!

It's a nice pearl white paint job, decent bike, but just ol' Thron tubing. I bought it as a back up, then never really used it. She loves it. Put some 28 mm 4 Seasons on it, she's happy.

When I really got into cycling in the early 2000s, I scored a lot of nice stuff on c-list. Now I don't see anything worthwhile or special. Ugh, the guys trying to resell 200 junky bikes they've reconditioned...very annoying.

On Monday I saw a CL ad for a mint Serotta Colorado TI for $300 or best offer. After speaking with the seller by phone I felt it was a little bit sketchy so I didn't pursue it.

Not CL but several years ago somebody got lucky on an early 90's (I think) Specialized Rockhopper, non shock forks, in a light tan paint with brown lettering for $25. It was in mint condition. Like the Trek Multi Trak I had and stupidly sold.
It was one of the best condition vintage desirable hybrid bikes I have ever seen cheap.

I've had a few flaky sellers.
  1. Mini Lathe. I was struggling to figure out how to haul it home on my bike, but getting ready to go pick up half of it when I heard that the seller's wife sold it, apparently not realizing that the husband had committed it.
  2. Bike Friday. I didn't really need it, but I think it was offered for about $300 which was too low to pass up. Apparently the seller decided not to sell it.
  3. Peugeot PX-10. Pretty battered. Poor photos, but offered for $75. Seller responded to about 1/4 of my e-mails (which I sent several). Sent a note that we should meet, but never gave me a phone number, or a meeting place. A few days later, a bike flipper had snagged the bike, and offered it back on Craigslist for $300+. Apparently it had some Campy, perhaps Nuovo Record bits. It was so frustrating of an experience that I just let it go. I just hope he paid the full asking price for the bike when he bought it.
  4. Oh, then there was a Garmin 810 up in Portland. About $100 or so, I think. It is about 150 miles away by bike... but I was heading up there. Unfortunately, the week or so I was up in Portland, the seller was out of town, and then returned back to town the day after I left. And, of course, it is too complicated to get someone to hold something until my next trip up there.
  5. An older Trek Carbon Fiber frame, forgot the model, for $50, I think. Anyway, I often give a person a "tip" if I think it is undervalued. We agreed to meet. I was on my bike with my trailer, and about 8 miles down the road when I got a text from the seller that someone had offered him more, so he sold it.
  6. I have another local seller that I've contacted recently for some odds and ends. He replies... slowly. So far no phone number. Suggests we can meet, but without a time or place. I've been in and out quite a bit this last week, but probably could have swung by to snag it a couple of times, if only I had the proper contact info. We'll see what happens.

I don't know if this count:
Huffy Silver Shadow for 35$.
Banana seat bike from 71, rare, evaluation at least 350$.
This happened yesterday.
The seller has only the CraigList email, we changed emails, I gave him my phone no. so he can call me after work. But he actually gave me another email which I didn't see, the kids were playing on the computer.
I didn't even have time to save a picture, he erased the post fast.
