Need advice re Valuating a 1980 Austro Diamler w/Nuovo Record Italian Components
Can anyone give me help with a Smoked Chrome Austro Diamler 26" Road racing Bike with Nuvo Record Itialian Components on the entire frame.
Also, a RED Duplicate 24" women's version, in PERFECT condition.
Spotless and still in PERFECT condition----Both, to Reiterate.
Absolutely Beautiful.
I understand that they are worth up to $5000. a piece, to the right person.
However, I want to find out if that is ONLY 1 person, and if there are more accurate insights, OR if the $%K figure is accurate.
They are both still road worthy racing bikes (light as feathers), but they're so beautiful, it's hard to take them out.
I appreciate your insights, and thanks so much.

I think the value is just a little ambitious. If it's smoked chrome, it's either a Vent Noir, or Vent Noir II. There are several over on Ebay now. I looked at sold and completed listings but came up empty.
Value for a really nice one I'll take a stab at and say $1000. Remember, it's just a stab. Something else to remember, this was the third bike down in the A-D line, behind the Superleicht and the Ultima, their top of the line bike.
A lot of the Vent Noir's attraction is primarily from the smoked chrome finish.

We can't value the bikes without pictures but they are not worth $5,000.

Condition is top priority when evaluating a top line A-D from the 80's, as their finish and paint were quite fragile.
A-D's are quite popular, but their values never really matched up to top line Italian counterparts. The $1K estimate seem good for an A-D in exxellent condition, though the largish size might not attract as many buyers than somethung in the 52 - 56cm sizes....

Second question, would you sell such bikes, in this condition, for $1K, or keep them??
For $1K, my instinct is to keep them, considering the native value. I paid $1000. Each for them new. $1K then = ~$10K now in value. Factoring that in means that I am selling them for next to nothing at $1000. in todays money.
Thanks Much!

$1,000 in 1980 equals $3,147.74 in 2017.

They are nice bikes, but not really grail bikes for most collectors. Do you still ride them?

Please provide link where one sold for $5000. Asking prices are meaningless. If someone told you its worth $5000, sell to them quick.
If its really 26 inch size, I would be taking that offer ASAP. I kind of have my doubts, and I have never seen a 24 inch size womens vintage bike either. Google bike size measurement, and with a tape measure, it only takes about 10 seconds to verify size.
As far as what to do, what provides more value to your family, $1000 or a bike hanging in the garage. Like anything, vintage stuff can go up and DOWN in value, so it may be worth less in the future.
FWIW, there is one on eBay right now, in a more desirable size, asking price is $1000, or best offer. Hasn't sold.
If you want to ride it, different answer. Then you can get the value out of it by using it. Not light as a feather either. More like 22 pounds or more (maybe 24 pounds). Realize if it has been sitting for many years, its going to need complete service, most likely cables, housing and tires too. If you pay someone to do this work, you could drop $300 into one bike.
Calculating inflation adjusted prices for something sold 35 years ago is foolish. Most items bought that long ago are worth a small fraction of the original price, not even including inflation. Bicycle technology has improved greatly in the intervening years. The bike I bought for $169 in 1975 is worth less (not adjusted for inflation), despite being very well maintained and excellent condition.

When was the last time the bearings were overhauled? Again if they have been sitting or hanging for a decade or two they need to stripped to the bare frame and cleaned greased and re assembled.
Thank You for your insight. It is a Vent Noir (first version, not II).

There was a matching pair of 1972 AD Supeliechts on ebay back in 2011. Full NR, Cinelli cockpit, Fiamme rimes and a somewhat rare Ideal saddle. It was pretty clear they were a his and hers, and had maybe been ridden 100 miles and set aside. (Cycling is hard) The tires still had the centerline ridges. I bought the 25" and my friend bought the 23". Too bad I really needed a 24" and he needed a 22". They were only made in 2" steps.
Anyway, we both paid $700, and a few years later when we sold them, the sale price was pretty much the same. SO I would be surprised if you could get over $1000 for either. There just does not seem to be a market for them.
Although, you may want to target an Austrian buyer. The bikes were built there, but only sold in the US. I rode it in Eroica one time, and this Austrian guy came running up to me. He was almost crying, he was so happy to see one in person.

The Vent Noir is a beautiful bike and featured in at least one book of classic modern rides:
https://www.amazon.com/Cyclepedia-Ce.../dp/1452101671
It’s all 531, handmade (although brazing can be sloppy), and yours features Campagnolo components. I’d value it in the $500-$1000 range. They are fairly hard to come by but even so the ones listed for over $800 on eBay go unsold.
They come in many varieties which makes pricing tricky. There are at least 3 different finishes: matt black, light smoked chrome, and dark smoked chrome. There are also at least three component combos. Badging is all over the place. I have one with TA and Huret parts sold as a Sport Tourer, and another came with Japanese components.
Mine rides great and is a keeper for sure.

As noted earlier, the bike starts out as third-in-line in AD's pantheon. I've seen a number of Vent Noirs in my years and I have to say I wasn't really impressed with the frame's details. Fairly sloppily built, in actual fact.
NR components on a workmanlike frame. We still have no pics, so can only guess that the soft-consumables like tires and gum hoods are shot; that brings down the value. In the end, however, the VN just wasn't that awesome of a bike and I can't see it commanding awesome bike money. FWIW, $600 to $800 if in near-new condition. No more than $350-$400 if it actually needs work.
But really, we have to see pics. One person's "mint condition" is another person's "good".

Trust advice you get on this site. Some of the most knowledgable bicycle people in the world are on here. I am not one of them, I just have too much time on my hands. But I know 5000 each is not happening. Ever. So get rid of that number. Probably 600-800 for a very good bike and if it really is perfect maybe 1000 with a great eBay ad. That's my guess. Post some pictures to know for sure.

+10 on next to nothing. I have many vintage bikes that apparently are worth half of next to nothing.

I don't get it. You asked for advice, and you got it. You're under no obligation to take the advice you've been given. What's the problem here?

When you factor in inflation through the years, most bikes had lost value. Maybe only ones that really appreciated were the historically significant collectibles connected to famous champions and races.
In the end, C&V bikes are just not that essential or sought after universally by the public, so most $1K bikes from the 80's do not sell for the "expected" $3+K of today's money....... So not really the best speculative, long term investment, if you were thinking of that....
