Custom Cecil Behringer

Here's the story from the wayback machine:

Around 1982 in high school or so I worked part time assembling bikes at a local shop so that I could build a bike to race with. The owner of the shop had this frame , and I put together a lot of new BMX bikes to pay for it and the hodgepodge of affordable but quality parts that are on it. Here's the lowdown:

+/- 60 cm Behringer Custom frame, i believe it's a criterium bike because of the short wheelbase and steep head angle. the paint was in really poor shape, so I had a friend who worked in a body shop strip and paint it. It was a high school buddy quality bit of work, good from far but far from good. and it's got some dings from crashes and storage. Inexpensive wheels, I can't remember what kind, Shimano 600 derailleurs, a specialized crankset and the rest of the components are basic entry level racer stuff. I quit racing just after college in the early 90's, and it's been in my basement or attic ever since. I just had a local shop run through everything and do new tires, etc. because this thing should belong to someone who can enjoy it. It's total Ferrari of a criterium or road bike and someone should have it either to restore or just ride. I know it's an oddball frame builder, so I have no idea what I should ask for it.

Here are some pics:

I also have the original 13-21 Shimano cassette. I had the bike shop put a 13-28 on i thinking I might ride it. Too old for such a steed.

Paint, size/geometry, and time of year would hurt value. Potentially location too. In Minnesota? Likely more interested parties. Value is in the frame, but like I said, repaint makes placing value tricky. I’d say $500-ish at first blush without seeing it and knowing what the “dings” are.

Would be substantially more with original (even rough original) paint and a complete and/or higher end group.

With that said, I like it anyway. Seen a few of his frames first hand and Cecil did great work.

Thanks- that's what I was thinking. the frame itself is great, only paint chips and no metal damage. If I could go back in time and undo the decision to repaint? At the time it was missing a good portion of paint entirely and had no Behringer markings at all. At this point I'm thinking I will hang it in the garage in front of the 1980's Klein poster and dream of Cat 3 sprints to the finish. Thanks for the help.

Dan at Grand Performance in St. Paul raced Behringers.

Pretty bikes!

I've kept my eyes open for one, but they really don't come up often.

@OP If you really love this one, have you considered sending it off to Chris Kvale for a refinish?

Might be a showstopper.

It's funny you say that. I just got finished sending pics for a quote to Black Magic Paint here in Portland. I also have a line on a complete Shimano 600 groupset. Getting serious here, I better check with the wife first....

I have observed a few auctions on his work, under appreciated. They all went for under $1,000.
Nothing my size yet. Tall guys are cheap, well thrifty. Wait till Spring. Unfortunately you will do best parting it out.

Actually, the darn thing is so close coupled you don't have to be tall to ride it. I'm only 5'11" and would normally ride a 56 or 58, but the bike fits me like a charm. I'm going to keep it and find an interior wall to hang it on. A memento to the glory days of cat 3 and 4 , you know...

Hmmm,

A classic bike show at a bike shop with a 14 beer tap list? Twist my rubber arm! I need a few more posts to see and reply to your PM.

I found the old specialized shoes that go with the look pedals, I can ride it now. Way back machine fired up! Now to lose about 40 pounds so I don't look like a fat old fart.

Finally getting around to dealing with this. A question- should I sell the frame only or as a complete package?

You might make more money piecing this out, but it would likely be a pain in the rear.

Are you ebay savvy?

I'll let some folks locally know about this and see if there is interest.

Thanks, I'm currently thinking gone to a good home is more important than maximum sales price. I haven't used ebay, but I'm not afraid of it.

I checked in with two Behringer fans yesterday and they are out of the "classic" game indefinitely.

Give ebay a shot and be prepared to take what you can.

Also, figure out your shipping/packing options before you list.

I used to ship with Bikeflight when I was still horse trading.
