Canadian Made Raleigh Super Grand Prix

I did not plan on this but met with an old fellow in his 80's who could hardly talk but did get across that he bought this bike new, he just couldn't recall when. He thought it was a Canadian made bike. The only reason I looked at it was because I thought from the photos it was an old Super Grand Prix with upgraded cranks and pedals. He said that it was as he bought it, even the tires were original though he thought it had 28 inch wheels and they clearly are 27s (Michelin 630 x 32mm).

It was incredibly dirty but seems to be just dirt and with minimal rust. I think a good cleaning and my son can have it to ride to work or I'll flip to a needy friend

It has Shimano Exage Motion shifters that I have never seen before, as well as "Tange 5" tubing and brake levers with two piece hoods.

Does anyone know if it truly is equipped as a Super Grand Prix and is it worth more than $100?

The Exage group indicates that the bike is from the late 80s/early 90s. Everything in good shape?

Yessir! At least it appears that way. Driving rain so I won't clean it tonight. I think I just have to take off the wheels and wash down and it will be good. PO apparently rode occasionally until recent health issues.

I'd say this is mostly, if not completely, OEM. The mono-stay rear triangle with a single plain gauge CrMo tube (i.e. seat tube) and hi-tensile everywhere else were traits of the entry level, Canadian market frames in the late 1980s to early 1990s. The Exage Motion would place it circa 1988-1989. The exact year can be determined from the serial number.

Thank you all!

I will have to clean off the dirt under the BB to get the number. Its just that it's 1c (33F) outside so I don't have the desire to find out today.

I will post serial numbers (in case someone likes these) and cleaned up photos when I can.

Cleaned up and ready to ride I'd put it easily north of $100.00 in worth. I had a bike with Exage, not spectacular but solid and reliable.

Hi All,

I have a 12 speed black super Grand Prix. SN RS9 86178. It Is Exage Motion chainring and Shimano friction/index shifters.

SN would imply December 1989 but 86178 in the production run seems high would it not?
