...every Maruishi I've ever seen was clearly marked as such and had kangaroos on the fork crown.

Any chance someone might've brought it from overseas? A quick Google search turned up some Maruishi Velnamo hits, largely from Southeast Asia, e.g. Thailand & Vietnam.

If the serial number is two letters followed by five numbers, that would be consistent with Maruishi's numbering scheme.

It's an upper entry level model, mid-1980s,based on the Shimano Z-series shift levers. The level is confirmed by the presence of a rear derailleur with a claw mount. Maruishi started adding the embossing to the fork crown and stay caps circa 1984, so it's still possible that this is a Maruishi, despite the lack of embossing. The serial number will confirm this and provide the year of manufacture. It's almost certainly from somewhere in the region of Eastern Asia or Oceania based on the lighting system mounted on the right fork blade. I'm not sure that it's a touring bicycle, as opposed to one of those dressed up urban bicycles that were popular in the Japanese market, as during this period Maruishi did offer true grand touring modes in America, with triple chaintrings and cantilever brakes. It's upsetting that the owner couldn't even be bothered to mount the chain for the photograph.

There was a time when most Maruishi model names ended in Ace: RoadAce, TourAce, MountainAce, EagleAce.

What is the serial number for the bicycle? This can sometimes be used to determine the frame manufacturer.

How to find date codes for Maruishi

I recently picked up a Maruishi, but can't find anywhere to check what year the bike is. Does anyone know of a date code resource for Maruishi? The serial number on mine is FF65003, and found on the seat tube.

Thirdgen, it's either the 6th fortnight or June of 1986. It could also be 1976 or 1996 but Maruishi had a much smaller presence (in the USA) in 1976 and was virtually non-existent (in the USA) in 1996. Provided you're in the USA, statistical probability leans heavily towards it being a 1986 model.
