Schwinn SportAbout

Hey all , have a Schwinn SportAbout. Yellow color. Seems all original. Just needs chain and one brake cable. I've been told these bikes may be worth some money? It appears to be from the 70's. Any idea of what it might be worth? Thanks!!!

Who told you this?

Very similar to the Varsity, slightly heavier actually. Sold for less than the Varsity. The Sportabout was the bottom of the adult 10 speed bike product line.

Not rideable.

Seems original = will need full maintenance/refurbish, not just a quick tuneup.

$10 to $20. If someone has offered you $50, take it quick!

As said the Sportabout is about the least valuable of the 60's-70's Schwinns. In original but slightly rough shape needs some work and parts $30-40 as a parts bike to the right buyer is about all it's worth. One of these will cost 3x what it's worth in great shape ready to ride to refurbish.

Uggh!!!!!

Your bike needs much more than just a chain + brake cable.

It appears to be missing both brake levers. Missing rear brake caliper. Missing all the brake cables/housing.

Missing the front Derailleur.
Can't tell if the rear derailleur is there.
Derailleur cables loose???
Both tires appear to be bad.
Rims rusty.

Undoubtedly the bike would need at least a complete strip-down and grease job. And, it would take a lot to make it showroom condition. The best you can realistically hope for is to put it back together and use it as a town bike/commuter.

If you have a local co-op / bike recycler, you may be able to get quite a few parts for cheap. But, you still have some work ahead of you.
@wrk101 is often a bit low... but in this case... pretty close... $25.... and you may still not even be able to sell it quickly.

My god. Another one of the "when the planet splodes" bikes. Put a basket on it and plant a tree in it and fuhgetabowdit. Lawn art.
