1992 Trek 970
Hi All,
I'm new here first post!! I just picked up a 1992 Trek 970 (Sour Grape) and I'm not sure what I would like to do with it. I'm not a mechanic but I would have the ability to rebuild. Has anyone rebuilt one?

Welcome to the forum!
We need pix of your new ride. New members need at least 10 posts to be able to post pix. If you go to the Intro section and say hello to eight of your new friends in their posts, you'll hit that minimum. Once there, click on the Reply button at bottom (not the Quick Reply button next to it), click on Manage Attachments, and upload from there.
One thing about our forum is that selling is not allowed without a paid membership. So you won't be able to sell your bike here unless you invest and then post an ad in the classifieds. See the stickies and the banner atop this column.

I also have a 1992 Sour Grape, but unfortunately the paint was too far gone when I bought it a year ago, so I had it powdercoated. After a complete rebuild it looks like this now. Great bike.

That is Nice!! I can't put a pic up yet but I will once I can. Someone swapped the front fork on mine at some point and put a Marzocchi XC 300 on it. If I rebuild it will need complete crankset replacement. Other than that the frame is pretty good I would probably just touch up the paint on it there are a couple spots with bad scrapes. Good to know a body shop owner who can help me out.
Thx for sharing..

I have a one step down 950 and I'd love to find a sour grape 970 in my size. I think the only difference is DX components on the 970 vs LX on the 950, I just like the grape color. Depending on your market / condition the value is between $100-$200 and around $300-$400 on eBay. Very clean ones can fetch a little more. The suspension fork actually hurts it in my opinion as finding parts for old shocks is difficult.
I went through mine and cleaned / greased it up. It is however back on the stand as I testing it with a drop bar.

I put the value lower since it is missing original fork and its reported as a project. I bought a project 1992 950, complete including fork, for $50. If it has any rust, I'd put value lower. Old suspension forks do not age well, tend to be shot, needing to be rebuilt.
$50 to $100 max as it sits, depending on cosmetics (paint, decals, rust, etc.)

Going to rebuild!!
I really like the looks of it so I think I’m going to rebuild/upgrade it. The frame paint isn’t horrible except for a couple bad scrapes so I think I’m going to have it redone in the same color. I’m beginning my search for a fork. I found someone who has a Trek 7000 for sale but asking too much in my opinion. If anyone has a source where I might find fork please share. I going to upgrade the entire gear group set, derailleurs and brakes. I always appreciate input so if you have any please share. Thanks

Fork = find a co-op, or go with a chrome one.

Anyone have or know where I can find full set specs? All I can locate is what’s in the brochure for 1992.
i have found a 1992 7000 with all original parts. It appears to be same fork as the 970. He is asking $200 for it which I think is a bit much but if all the other components are good I could put the 970 pretty much back to original. Should I pull the trigger on it?

I just found an original fork on EBay!! Paid more for it than I did for the whole frame. At least it will be matching now and I can begin the rebuild.
Any advice on groupset. The original config is 3x7 I’m finding it difficult to find original Deore and don’t mind upgrading the whole set.

It was likely the M650 Deore DX Series: VeloBase.com - View Group The crank is probably the FC-MT60 with 46/36/26, but don't quote me on that. If you don't have the original XT shifters, they will be expensive.
Personally, if you don't have the original components, I'd modernize it with newer parts. The Shimano ST-EF50 and ST-EF500 shifter/brakes come in a version that works with cantilever. Just make sure you don't get the V-brake ones, unless you add V-brakes.

One of the original shifters is busted and the derailleurs don’t look so hot either so I think I’m just going to modernize the whole group and maybe switch over to v brakes.

If it has the original Deore DX dérailleurs, they are tough and should clean up and work nicely. Test them before replacing.

Good choice to build, I have the Trek 930. It was the Rock Shock version, True Temper xo tubing Midnight Green in color. I went with Deore 3x9 shifters and drs, replaced the Fork with a kona project 2. I gave it to a kid for college gift.

^ Looks like the seatpost and saddle have been replaced with something low-grade from a big box store bike.
Catalog specs are here (pg5): https://www.vintage-trek.com/images/t...ikecatalog.pdf
I think you'll like the bike though. I have a '92 Trek 930.

Keep the brakes, derailleurs, and everything else. Put on your new fork and find a shifter for the right side. Don't **** around with v brakes when you have a nice oe set. Get some new grips or at least plugs.

The bike looks much better with the rigid fork and Maxis (DTH?) tires.
