1982 Trek 728/720 F/F 21”

Seller is asking $200 for frame and fork, including original headset and bottom bracket. Paint is in decent used state with no dents or dings and a few scratches. Decals (Reynolds 531) are showing wear/fading on fork as well as seat tube.

Seller claims frame was originally sold as full bike (as 728). Serial number lookup on vintage-trek website shows it is a 21” 720 from 1982. No canti posts as these originally came with those pretty NGC-450 centerpull brakes.

Sorry, no pics. Does $200 sound like too much?

I think $200 is more than fair on a straight vintage desirable Trek Touring frame/fork. I’m new at pricing these old Trek f/f sets but quickly finding out that’s what they go for ( $175-$250 ) or even more if it’s in your size and just gotta have it. Keep in mind that those NGC-450 Center Pull Brakes will be difficult to find and even harder to find cheap. These came with Regida Alloy 700c wheels laced to Suzue sealed bearing hubs. Suntour bar-cons,, these parts will set you over budget if building it back to spec.

I have a 1982 Trek 728 that I purchased from original owner. He said he ordered it from a bike shop in 1982 and it arrived from Trek inside a box not assembled.
My serial number also comes back from vintage trek as a 720 model. The fork is etched 728 along the section that goes inside the frame head tube. Just something to look for...
on my local CL,, one seller has a complete 728 size 22” frame listed for $700. Price keeps going back and forth.. $650-$700. I included photo of CL bike for sale, it’s not mine.

$200 sounds fair to me.

I would pay $200 if I had to have it. Hope you have a great parts stash to build it up otherwise I might put more modern parts on it to my liking. Those NGC-450 Center Pull Brakes are very pretty and probably scarce. I had a 728 go through my hands in 2009. Very nice bike. I sold a 1981 710 frame for about $200 a year ago on CL so the market is there for the 728.

Thanks for the replies. Yes, thankfully I picked up a set of those nice-450s at an ok price sometime back so I should be good on those. I have everything else I need to complete the bike (period correct, or close enough).

Only decision I’ll need to continue agonizing over is friction (Suntour barcons+ cyclone-2 derailleurs + 5sp freewheel) vs indexed (shimano barcons + deore mt60 derailleurs + 7sp cassette).

Build I however you desire and it’s a 720.

Put it together back to 1982 spec and it’s a 728. BTW the 82’ Trek 728 came with the Suntour Ultra 6 speed freeewheel 14-28 cogs.

How did this build turn out? Been on the lookout for '82 720 for my wife, and would love to see how you decided to build this up, especially your drive train conundrum.

Unfortunately the build had to get sidelined in favor of various other dalliances (refurbishing family bikes, fiddling with my handlebar+stem setup on my univega specialissima, and generally suffering the fallout from N+1 disease).

Frameset is in hand, parts are ready and decisions have been made, for now at least. In case you’re curious: friction with suntour barcons and cyclone II derailleurs; sugino AT crankset; stock brakeset but with aero gran compe levers. I even sourced an ultra-6 freewheel.

I’ll be sure to put a build thread together whenever I get to it.
