Trek 770 advice

Hi!

I have been riding for awhile now, but almost always beater bikes that were $25 and may not have even fit me properly. Last year, I stumbled upon a Trek 420 and never looked back.

Unfortunately, it got stolen a couple of months ago. I have gone through my mourning period and am looking for love again.

I found this Trek 770 on Craigslist for $350 and was wondering if itís a good deal. Iíve read through the many threads on the 770 get a clear sense that people love the frame, but this bike has mixed components, and since there is so much I donít know about bikes, and because I have heard mixing component brands can be tricky, I feel like the hike may be more trouble than itís worth.

here is the info from the seller:

"The bike is in great condition. As you may know these bikes originally come equipped with Campagnolo SR but this bike did not. It seemed to be upgraded with some not all 90s Shimano ultegra components including Ultegra rear derailler and mavic open pro wheels laced to ultegra hubs. The rest are components that are correct to the time period of the bike but not original. The brake calipers, brake levers and downtube shifters are Suntour Superbe. The frame and fork are made of Reynolds 531Competition tubing. The stem and drop bars are Cinelli."

Any advice or thoughts would be much appreciated!

It's an '84 770. Unless it was originally bought as a frameset and built up, it should be full Campy SR. The mixed bag hurts value, IMHO, even if the parts are nice. They're nice bikes, and ride well, but I'd probably not lay out $350. Others will argue the value, but there was an '85 with correct Campy SR went for just over $400 on one of the Facebook groups not long ago. Just another data point. Have you ridden it? Is it your size?

@dr.spatula - the value is market driven. I would start 25% lower and move up with the intent of purchase as it is a good value, since it is your size. The parts are good and it will work fine in terms of mixed components. I believe it will only increase in value over time as it is one of the higher end Trek's. There aren't that many for sale around this area.

I don't know anything about the Trek 770, but that is a nice looking bike.

Thank you for your input, everyone. The seller asked me point blank how much I would be willing to pay if I like the bike in person. I offered $300. Now it's only a matter of flying in to the country and checking it out! Fingers crossed that it's a good fit.
