1972 or 1973 Cilo
Not sure if this Cilo is a 1972 or 1973. Hubs and drivetrain are patented 1972 Campagnolo Nuovo Record. Brakes are Weinmann 610 brakes. Ohrt was strong on CH product. They had some house brand machines done there as well. Appears 100% original. Angles look to be surprisingly shallow. Had a friend who owned one of this model from this time. His example was deep blue flambouyant. Had been brought in by a sporting goods company in Colorado called Bass Sports. These bikes sold well when first imported, everything was selling well. The last few lingered. Nice bike. In desperate need of an overhaul and deep cleaning. I think at this time the chrome panel on the seat tube is just that, chrome. Some of these came with Duralca rims. Some Weinmann. This bike if it fit you would be a terrific all day in the saddle bike. |

Be nice to know if the Cilo is metric tubing like an Allegro; then, whether it takes a 26.4 or a 26.6 mm seatpost. My Allegro takes the latter, and the thinner tubing walls in a 60 cm metric gauge frame is buttery smooth riding. |

I had one of these, full 531 frame and campy drop outs. It was a very nice rider. I ended up giving it to my brother. Someone had destroyed the BB shell and I ended up reaming and tapping the BB to Italian.

Here in Switzerland this would be priced between 500 and 800 chf if overhauled. 150-300 chf as it is now.

Thanks for getting back to me everyone. I was able to get a hold of a Cilo bike collector in Switzerland and according to my serial number, it was bike number 664 made on October 1973. Even though Cilo ended production in 2002 they were also in the motorbike game. He was also able to help me facilitate buying the original headtube decal from the leftover motorbike side of the company. On cleaning the bike, I made the mistake of using Simple Green cleaner on the frame. Apparently different parts of tubes on the bike were chromed. Not the whole tube chromed but about 3/4. Where it was chromed the paint didn't hold well and the cleaner ate through to the primer. I ended up painting the bike again. All the components I got cleaned. The Fiamme rim holes were rusted as the nipples so I will need to look for new rims. Probably go with some polished clinchers. The seatpost is indeed 26.6. The saddle is in useable condition. The silk tires have cracked. I can't seem to find any Cilo decals online. Will probably have to get it custom made. Here is what the bike looks at the moment. Slightly surprised to read the wheels were constructed with FIAMME rims, coming as she does from the homeland of Weinmann. Please post again when completed. :) --- Question for the experts - it has now been forty-five years since first encountering this marque. In all that time have never known the accepted pronunciation for the name. Be it "see-low" or be it "chee-low?" Reckon it depends upon the canton where the company is/was located... ;) ----- |
We from the german part of switzerland say „cheelo“. The name itself comes from „Cycles Jean Lausanne Oron“. |
I will be contrarian. The effort expended is showing a terrific clean up. The choice of Simple Green very unfortunate.
The bike was very close to returning to close to its original glory. The repaint really detracts. |
Your bike is looking great! I love how you kept the all the chrome! I'm working on restoring a 1972 Cilo Swiss Sprint-X and had it powder coated. Unfortunately, I was not able to salvage all that chrome. As you previously mentioned, finding decals has proved very difficult. Specifically finding the ones for a Sprint X from the 70s. I've been finding a lot of decals that appear to be from the 80's. What are you planning to do about the decals? I ordered some that I believe are from the 80's era, but I'm unsure if I will use them or keep looking.
I'll share some pics here in the next couple of weeks. |

Congratulations on the new baby! Family definitely comes first! I just completed my Cilo and I went with what I believe is the 80's era decals. I could be wrong on the era since it's been hard to find info on it. Op, do you know what your bike's model is? Found one like it today but there doesn't seem to be a decal indicating the model. SN is 66495. Photos uploaded into the gallery. Thanks.

SPRINT X stem launch 1971 so cycle unlikely to be earlier - a definite boomer although Campag NR equipped bottom bracket lockring is non-Campag - perhaps there was another chainset in there previously... ----- |
