Late 1980's Bianchi Top Models

I am looking at what appears to be an 1989 Bianchi Superleggera. The right chain stay is not chrome and the bike has the Superleggra label on top tube (other years the right chain stay was chrome). I've always thought this was the pre-cursor to the Mondiale. But, I've read this was the model below the Mondiale. Can someone confirm where the Superleggera was in the late 80''s.

As I already have a Mondiale 89.

According to the US Catalog '88 and '89 the Super Leggera was second from the top the top being the Mondiale. The '88 was SL with Chorus and the '89 SLX with Chorus. The catalog doesn't show a chrome chainstay for either year.

It depends on the model year, in some years there was no Super Legera, '85/86 for example and in '87 the X4 was tops followed by the Mondiale, Giro and then the Super Legera. In '90 basically the same bike was carried over from '89 but the Mondiale was only a frame set. The MAX tubed Proto was top dog so again the Superleggera was playing second fiddle.

Ok, thank you for the information. I don't have clear photos yet. But I don't see a red tubing sticker, so more than likely this is not the SLX. That would make it the 88 SL
It must be outfitted with Chorus. Seller wants a fair price, considering what low end Celeste are going for. I missed an X3 on Ebay for 1200.00.

Although still tempted, since I don't have room for many bikes. It's hard to justify buying a lower model than what I already have considering its age and level.

In 1989 the top 3 models were all the same frame and fork (SLX tubeset, Gipiemme dropouts) and just differed in components. C Record, Chorus, Athena

No Chrome, that is interesting. It also looks to be SLX tubing. The catalog I have does show chrome for the rear chain stay. But certainly this is a Superleggera.

I own the 1989 Bianchi catalog from when the bike was new. No chrome in the picture or the specs for the Super Leggera. It specifies SLX/SLP throughout.

I don't see the LA one on CL and link? Depending on the Condition I might pay $600 for '89 SuperLeggera. I had an '88 and it was a fabulous bike but I suspect the SLX framed '89 is even better.

The subject bicycle is definitely the 1988 model. It's got the 2nd generation Syncro shift lever and the freewheel has been swapped for one with a larger range, so the shifting performance is anybody's guess. Even with Chorus, the proper freeweel and chain, Syncro II was only OK but it can get downright nasty trying to get things to work with non-OEM freewheels and chains .At least, you can always switch it to friction mode. Condition is below average. IMO, it is significantly overpriced.

Where is the subject bike? The only pic I see is the one rjhammett sold a few years ago and that kind of looks like a SLX decal on it. Did the '88s have SLX?

Well just to muddy the waters a little, here’s a pic of an ‘89 Giro I bought from original owner and included the catalog with an unchromed chainstay. The frame was a little big for me so I sold it (2 or 3 years ago for $425) and bought same frameset (from a BFer via eBay for $450) with different graphics but same features. I think I finally came to conclusion the replacement was a Canadian or European market from to explain the different graphics and paint tint. At any rate I think that’s a fair price on the one malcala posted. Syncro 2 works nicely on this Bianchi with a 7 speed Sachs freewheel and modern KMC 8 speed chain.

Since the Mondiale, SuperLeggera and Giro all shared the same frame, Bianchi Italy just used the same frame across the line with the chromed chainstay after Bianchi USA printed their catalog. One of these is one my find list, however that may change after I get the SBX frame I purchased last fall on the road.

Or it is possible a shop needed a 51 Mondaile but only had a 59 and too the Athena off a 51 Giro and put the Croce de Anue on it and the Athena went on the 59 Mondiale frame making it a Giro with a chrome stay.
