Lemond Model and Price?

Hey guys,

This popped up in NOCO for $300. Guy says it's all Ultegra, but I can't make out the model. Any idea of model or price?

https://fortcollins.craigslist.org/b...813492799.html

Thanks!

What's going on with that top tube? I would need to check that out in person, but I suspect some sort of repair was done. The owner painted over where the model name is, plus the forks too, it looks like

It's definitely a fixer-upper, I would do a repaint if I bought it. But it's my size, and I wouldn't be flipping it. With that bad paint, and all the work it'll take to fix it, I think $200 would be a more reasonable price. Though I don't know your area.

The market definitely slows down in the winter, but for some reason the prices stay pretty high.

I'd guess it's a '99 Zurich. Everything but the stem seems original. I paid $250 for my '96 in much better condition. Those shifters look beaten! They're nice but watch out for the loooonng toptube!

Talked to the guy and he said someone sharpied/spray painted the tt and sides of the fork. He sent other pictures and it looks like hell. He said it would come off with a bit of paint thinner haha. I'll pass that one quickly. Shame too.

I think it's worth $200 as is, but I enjoy wasting time and money re-painting frames. Not everyone is willing to put that much work into a frame, but I happen to know these 853 Lemonds are worth it.

Yeah, I'd agree with this. These frames are great. Worth the time and effort for a repaint.

Looks like it might be a '99 Zurich. Spec'd with Ultegra, 853 triangle and 725 stays, carbon fork.

I agree with above. If it's your size I think you'd find it a great ride. If you can get it for a price you're comfortable with, it would be worth some time and paint to make it look good. In good shape, that bike would list at about $700 in these parts.

If that's just felt tip pen, it might very well clean up, depending on if it penetrated the clearcoat or not. I recall a friend of mine who was in the auto painting business telling me that felt pen marks would usually always wipe off a car's factory paint, it was only a problem if the marks were on non-factory paint.

The paint came off this Lemond with solvent and rubbing compound.

For reference, I picked up an 02' Zurich two weeks ago for $200 and it's in near mint shape with all original parts. I would say that the market should still be higher than that for an 853 frame but the paint drags it down a bit, obviously.

A data point, but not necessarily a reference point. A Zurich in that condition is a steal at $2bills. I've watched Lemonds for over a year nationally..$200 is essentially unheard of for that year range & (higher end..) model range. It's too easy for sellers to check pricing on similar models as Lemond had good sales and there's lots of them out there. Still, as in your case, some folks don't bother and just want it gone. You dun good.

I always get a kick out of sellers stating something is an easy fix. If itís so damn easy, why didnít they fit it? When in doubt I always assume itís NOT easy and get an appropriate discount. Sometimes I will make two offers, one if they fix it and another lower one if they donít.

i picked up a Klein once where the prior owner rattle canned over the original fade paint and decals. He basically ruined it. Components were beat to heck too. So I made an appropriate low offer and bought it. It took me several hours but with acetone I was able to remove the rattle can without damaging the original paint and decals. Looked good then but it was a fair amount of work.

who knows what lingers under that black stuff? Maybe the guy scuffed it up first to get the black stuff to adhere. Until itís all off, you wonít know.

Iím done taking the risk on bike buys. The seller either successfully cleans it up or I discount the bike down to parts. If I can successfully remove the black stuff, then thatís the reward for my hard work. If it doesnít work out, I probably breakeven but get zero for my time. If someone is willing to pay more great.

I think those are Ultegra 6500 parts.

I think the crank spider is one of the prettier designs of bikes around. However, one note is things like the little plastic shifter covers are impossible to buy, although someone may be 3-D printing some, but I didn't like the photos on E-Bay.

I bought a pair to replace a cracked cover. They're priced a bit high, but they do fit right and seem well made. The dark ones are sort of a charcoal-black rather than jet-black.
