1985 trek 420

Wondering what this frame set is worth. It is in rough shape and of larger size. (60cm)
I know it's just a middle of the road frame but the lug work on this is wonderful.

I'm considering making this into a grocery getter beater frame if it's worth what I think it is, which is to say not much. Ebay has old sales for this quality anywhere between 50-150.
Just curious about you alls thoughts.

Just love the lug work on this.

Chainstay damage

It's a decent quality frame with some rough paint--but doesn't look too bad. I feel like you should be able to get $100 for it. It'd make someone a nice beater for sure. I'd maybe ask for $125 and take offers.

Sold this one for $75 two years ago, for what it's worth.

Personally I love those lugs. I'd repaint or powdercoat it, build it up and ride the heck out of it. Mostly cosmetic damage to my eye.

That's the plan as it stands. Thinking I may leave the scrapes since I'll be riding to a college campus not known for bike saftey.
It looks like from the catalog this would have been one of the "sport tourer" rigs. How do those compare to the race version? I would prefer if it ended up more on the touring side as my favorite hikes all have touring geometry and long chain stays.

Scroll down to the '84 catalog and check out the geometry info:

howdy - i've got a size down and a year or two older. it's made from the 2001 Mangaloy tubing. Tange.
I paid $83 on Craigs List for the bike complete and original, about 2 years ago for the C&V 100 Challenge. A great purchase.
I swapped out just about all the parts -upgrades: dual pivot side pull brakes; 700c wheelset; bar end shifter wider bars; indexed derailleur ; etc etc -- probably I should have kept it all original. I don't know. The rear derailleur was bust. It had been torqued on where it should not have been. The bars were to narrow. It cascaded from there. I couldn't help myself. I might need help. (or is this my therapy..? )

I can fit - just barely through the chainstays - 35c tires on wide DYAD Velocity rims. Maybe narrower rims would allow a bit more clearance. There plenty of clearance to the brake bridge (and fork crown).
I've finally settled on 25C tires until I can wear them out and get 32c tires. Maybe 35s would be ok.
I'd rather have a 60cm frame, but I am not offering to buy yours. I'm focused on getting a GUNNAR CrossHairs.
Enjoy your frame. I like mine pretty well. The album shows most of the iterations I've put it through. Maybe it will inspire. Or maybe it will be a warning. Either way, I hope it helps.
ciao

As a frame of reference, about a year ago I paid $175 for a complete and original 1985 410 with a frame and fork in slightly better condition than the OP's - same color, same tubing.

For me this is a comfortable bike - sporty, but I'm not stretched out over the bars. I completely rebuilt it with new components and the new bars and stem I used are part of the reason it is comfortable - but i think it's a good frame for an all-arounder.

You can fit 38mm tires and fenders on this frame if you use 650b wheels.
