1981 Schwinn LeTour

Hi everyone - I"m a road cyclist with a nice road bike, but getting bored with it after many years of cycling and looking to find something to get me excited again. I also have a fitness bike I ride around my town and with friends.

I found this on Craigslist: https://erie.craigslist.org/bik/d/er...843715005.html for $175. Looks in great shape.

I'm looking to make it my new "running errands" bike. But more importantly to me is the fact that I had a Schwinn Traveler, and a World Sport back in the 80's, and this LeTour reminds me of being 15 years old again. I don't want to overpay for something just for sentimental reasons. I loved those bikes and it's what really got me into cycling.

Is $175 a good deal?

Low end, high ten steel frame, steel rims. Sentimental reasons? Price is OK. Logical reasons? No. You decide.

I agree. I don't know how firm he is on the price. I may try to find something cheap and just fix it up myself. Might be more rewarding.

Thanks for the input.

I would pass it would be worth it if everything in the add copy was correct but it's BS or the the seller is an idiot either way pass no way they did the rebuild described on this bike. Why would a seller do a $150+ parts and labor rebuild on a $50 set of 27 inch steel wheels and then sell the bike for $175. From add--

"[/1981 SCHWINN LE TOUR........23" FRAME...27" WHEELS....WHEELS WERE TOOK APART AND REBUILT WITH NEW SPOKES AND NIPPLES...QUICK RELEASE HUBS ( FRONT AND REAR ) WERE CLEANED AND POLISHED,GREASED WITH WHITE LITHIUM FOR EASY ROLLING...TRUED NICE AND STRAIGHT....BRAND NEW HIGH PRESSURE 27 X 1 1/4 TIRES AND TUBES WERE MOUNTED....NEW FOAM HANDLEBAR GRIPS...ALL NEW CABLES AND THE CASING THEY GO THRU.....CENTER PULL BRAKES WERE TAKEN APART,POLISHED,GREASED SO THEY WORK NICE AND SMOOTH....CRANK WAS REMOVED....CLEANED,,POLISHED...NEW BEARING WITH WHITE GREASE...HAS NICE VETTA SEAT ON IT.....DECALS MISSING IN A FEW SPOTS ( SEE PICS )...BUT THIS IS A 38 YEAR OLD BIKE....PAINT IS A LITTLE DARKER BLUE THAN THE PICS SHOW.....BRAKES AND GEARS WORK PERFECT......BIKE IS 100% READY TO RIDE.....BE DIFFERENT...RIDE VINTAGE.....CHANCES ARE GOOD YOUR THE ONLY ONE RIDING ONE LIKE THIS AT PRESQUE ISLE..................................PHONE CALLS ONLY.................NO TEXT....NO MAIL......HAVE A NICE DAY!!!!!!

You can do much better. I bought an '81 Le Tour in mostly rideable condition last year for 16-18 bucks.

Edit: Ha ha having said all that, since it fits me, I'll probably spend 175 or more changing out everything I feel like. Definitely more rewarding to do it yourself.

My wife and I bought matching LeTours back in 1981. They were painted black, otherwise they were identical to the one in the CL ad.

We paid $300.00 for the two of them. The LBS threw in a few extra goodies.

Nice bikes, wish we still had them (for sentimental reasons).

I would at least go see the bike. In our neck of the woods vintage nice bikes donít pop up to often. Iíve met the seller and he has done some very nice work.

I'm going to give him a call. You're right, I at least need to see it.
