Japanese Shogun 600 in Maroon

My friend is curious on the value of her Shogun 600, before she fixes it up. It has at least butted Cro-Mo main tubes. Fork and stays are probably plain gauge, or Hi-Ten. Got a nearly complete Shimano Arabesque 600 groupset, sans the tourney brake calipers. Based on the 1979 dates of the components, I think this is a ~1980 shogun. The serial number is S0I5995, if that's useful to anyone. It has aluminum 700c rims, which I think is rather unusual for this vintage. We are planning on fixing it up, and probably replace the brake levers (the current ones are very difficult to brake on the hoods). https://cimg5.ibsrv.net/gimg/bikefor...fad200fc97.jpg

Any thoughts on value?

Handsome bike! Rather than replacing the levers, try moving them up on the bars about 3/4 inch. That gives the rider more leverage for braking from the hoods in my experience.

As for price, I dunno. Older Japanese bikes like that seem to get $175 or so in my neck of the woods.

I saw one of these Shogun road bikes at a Play It Again Sports this week. Looks about like the one your posting photos of. Very clean and nice as I was thinking about making the purchase. They were asking $99 which looked like a steal for the bike.

My 1980 model was a little nicer, with horizontal forged rear drops and Tange Champion tubing. I sold it for around $400 in a big craigslist market a couple years ago. It was fully overhauled.

Pretty nice photos you have. That helps. If wanting top dollar, you need to sort out the cockpit with new tape, lever hoods, and cable routing. Trim the rear brake cable. I would also remove all the reflectors, including those on the pedals. Raising the seatpost for the photos would make it more stylish.

$120 as is in a bike market. With a little investment, it could go for double that, easy.

Based on the serial number and components, it's a 1980 model. Once it's cleaned up and with new bar tape and hoods, I'd value it at ~$200.

Thanks for the info. My friend is has decided to keep it, after trying it out for the last few days. It fits her well, and sheís in love with the color. Iím helping her completely overhaul it, so itíll be in tip top riding conditon in no time. Thanks for the shogun insight!
