I have a “Nearly-NOS” 1988 Centurion Dave Scott Master and am seeking advice! I say nearly-NOS because the bike is an absolutely mint garage queen with nearly no miles on it. My bike matches RobbieTunes’ “Ironman Information Thread” components listing perfectly, the only things that aren’t original to the bike are the bar tape and cables. Even the tires are original in perfect rideable condition, they still have the rubber mold injection “hairs” on them! The brake calipers still have the rubber grommet thingies, and it has the original turbo saddle too!




What I’ve done: I broke the bike down and serviced the components, including the headset, chain, and rear derailleur pulleys. The BB spins perfectly, so I left it alone. I then cleaned/polished the frame and all components and reassembled with new cables and bar tape. Other than a little yellowing of the clearcoat and a few minorpaint chips, the paint and decals are perfect. The only other issue is that the chainstay protector is a bit crinkled, but this can be easily replaced if needed.




Now comes my pleas for advice. What’s this thing worth in this condition? Is there a premium for NOS Ironmans? I know that these aren’t terribly rare, even in this condition, so does this affect value? I ask because I have a 1991 Merlin Road that also has a Shimano tricolor 600 groupset, and was debating trading the decent components from that bike for the nearly-NOS ones from the Ironman. Will exchanging the components for more worn ones drastically affect value? Of course, if there is a Ironman aficionado out there (RobbieTunes?) screaming about this sacrilegious thought, I would be happy to pass the bike on to that person!




This bike is sweet, but just a bit too small for me, so I want to get it to a BF member if possible. If that means I don’t get eBay money for it, I’m okay with it. So, after your advice and appraisals, I plan on posting it on the C & V for sale forum.

I bought one last year. Also an 88 Master in yellow/white fade and paid $200 in about the same condition. It has the original bar tape and original but un-ridable tires. I think it's worth more than what I paid. Maybe $400??

Up here you could get over $600 Canadian dollars ($450 US) and maybe even close to $800 if you hold out for the right buyer. That is largely due to the condition as well as the work you have put in to make it immediately ride-able.

Hahaha! Yeah, since I saw that was the name of the paint scheme I’ve also been humming Hendrix! And it looks like I was incorrect on the measurement... I measured C to C, when it is supposed to be C to T. It is actually a 58cm! Is this your size?

Im thinking of listening it for $400 on the C & V for sale forum. I don’t need top dollar on this as long as it goes to a good home

I did a little stalking (sorry) and saw your 88 yellow IM. Beautiful! Nice score for $200! Mine also came with the original handlebar tape, but it had some tearing and gaps, so I made the decision just to replace it with some fresh cork.

Really nice bike I would agree on the $500-600 value. Just as a note the rear wheel is to far forward in the dropouts and should be moved back a bit for safety and to prevent damaging the dropouts.

Mine is about as clean as yours overall. Funny because mine is also a 58 but a bit large for me. I was thinking last night about contacting you about a possible trade cause a 56 is more my size. My tape also had a small tear in it but that tape is so robust I was able to unwrap it and re wrap with the split being hidden. They're such great bikes to ride. If it's even close to your size I'd ride it a couple times before you sell it just to make sure you're not making a mistake.

I am now standing in a pool of my own saliva as I drool over your bicycle!!! That is an absolutely gorgeous bike in beautiful condition. It literally glows. That is one of my very favorite Centurions with the Jimi Hendrix color. It is too bad that it is a size 58 which is way too big for me.
Have you sold it yet?
P.S. The only thing I do not like is the clear plastic disc where the cassette is.

The 7 speed cassette I don’t believe is HG. The 6400 7-speed cassette hub I believe was UG (Uniglide). Based on the twist teeth I’d say it is a Uniglide cassette for sure.

I think that's high. The last new-ish Centurion Iron Man I bought was $550 plus shipping. In a better market.
