Hello all,


I'm new here. I have a few vintage bikes I'd like some opinions about and I understand there are a lot of opinions around here. :-)

Should I sell here, craigslist, tag sale or restore?


A white, step-through mixte Peugeot SN 2229782. It has a Record Du Monde gold lion on a red background decal, a Black Rampar spring saddle, Mafac "Racer" brakes, matching white Blue Mel's Lightweight plastic fenders with reflectors, Simplex front & rear derailleurs, Regita rims with Normandy hubs and straight quick release handles. It looks as if it has been painted once (with the decals taped off).


More info on the following if anyone thinks it's worth while. As soon as the forum lets me, I'll post detailed photos.


Blue step-through Motobecane


Brown step-through Raleigh Sports with metal fenders & chain guard.


Mustard
step-through Raleigh Sprite 27 with metal fenders & chain guard. Looks like it was painted once (with the decals taped off).


Blue Specialized Recumbant with Shimano STX crank, Shimano derailleur and Pepe Martinez 50mm Nicotine Ep's chain guide wheels.


Any input wold be appreciated.

You've got ten posts. So, upload some pictures. Take your time & make photographs as good as possible. Good clear pictures can help add $$$ to value of the bike when advertising & selling. Adjust camera settings for close ups & take pictures of components too. There are people out there looking for this stuff. They just need to see it first.

Instead of using gender to describe these frames, use "step-thru" or "step-through."

If it applies, you can be even more specific. Your Peugeot step-thru pictured above is a mixte frame.

It doesn't look to have been painted. As it sits, the value would be about $75 here in north NJ. But not at present. The market here is stone dead until the storm passes.

Whoever did it, did a good job but, It has been Painted. In person you can see where it was taped off to avoid painting the decals.

You have good skill taking pictures. I can't tell what's up with the re-paint comment. It looks pretty good to me. Make it look as attractive as possible. Raise the seat a few inches. Write up a good description including the component parts names. (It's all good except for the old chrome steel rims & tires will drive down price). Slap that bad boy up on Craigslist. Ask for at least $300 for it. Be good. Have fun.

A really good paint job should not affect the value much, especially for an inexpensive bike. This is a similar Peugeot I sold for $155 last year. A small frame, but in much nicer shape and updated with alloy rims. .

In no way do I see $300 there. Super job on presentation. Based on what I can tell, the tires are really old, crumbling. I am going to assume other maintenance has also been deferred (bearings, grease, cables).


Selling bicycles via Tag Sale you might as well donate them. Because the bike does look so good, I'd try to get $150 for it. Now maybe your market is better than mine. Last one of these I bought was $25, but that was a good deal.

In the end, you have a sharp looking, entry level vintage bike that needs maintenance. Buyers will be buying the "look".

I sold this yellow one (original paint and better color IMHO), fully refurbished, back in the vintage bike BOOM. Even then, I did not get close to Ramzilla's price. As far as components, those plastic Simplex parts are far from good. But you are selling a "look" rather than top quality.

As bikes go, this later Peugeot mixte, with an alloy crankset, better derailleurs, and alloy rims, is a better bike. But I sold it for less.

OK. Y'all are right. $300 is a little optimistic price for that. But, where I'm from people always negotiate & haggle over used bike price. And, you can never ask more than asking price. So, around here if you want $150 for a bike you start by asking $200. If you want to increase interest word your ad like this: $200 OBO. (For "or best offer"). Good luck. Have fun.

I'm wondering how much of this bike is original equipment.
Is the Rampar seat stock and did this Peugeot come with a pump? What about the fenders and that plastic bit on the bottom?

I believe that the bike is a UO18 which would have been supplied with a pump. I know that the UO8 that I bought in 1972 had a pump that came with the bike. I forget the brand name of the pump. A Rampar saddle was a Raleigh branded item. This bike would have come with an Ideal leather saddle

Better than fair chance the front plastic derailleur body already has the typical fatal crack, at least that is what I am pretty sure I see in the chainwheel image.

The market is in trouble, understandable, I would place it on ebay, distance selling seems to be the way to go right now.
Widest audience too. That is if you are willing to pack and ship. Have enough knowledge, tools, can find a box... if not reference bikeflights.

I also do not think it has been repainted, the transfers show as original with the yellowing clear beyond the graphic.

Downtube shift clamp is upside down, fastener should be below, that is the tell tale that perhaps Part of the bike has been repainted. Incorrect reassemble.

Does anyone know what year this Peugeot is?

The Peugeot Mixte
 

1) Shifter clamp and shift levers installed upside down.
2) Visible crack on front derailleur clamp. Maybe the bolt threads are still caught by the cracked Delrin half...
3) Quick release skewers reversed; levers should be on the non-drive side.


I would buy this bike just to harvest those skewers. In the DC market, which is absolutely dead, it'd sell at $125-150 with everything corrected and better tires. Subtract the cost of decent looking gumwall 27" tires ($50), I'd list this at $125 as is, and accept $100. Kenda or other tires would increase value some if you can buy them economically ($15 per tire), but the ride won't excite anyone.

The Normandy hubs will likely have a two digit date stamp. My guess? I've seen a few of these, and recently worked to a his-and-hers pair that were identical to yours, except that the saddles and tires had been upgraded. Early-to-mid 1970s?

On the 3 speed hub should be a code with the month and year- my guess before 1974

The Moto' I would guess 1976. maybe as early as 1974.

The white Peugeot mixte is model U018 and dates from either late 1971 or early 1972. Its shift lever mounting bracket is on upside down.

RAMPAR is a brand name employed by Raleigh for products made in Japan. There are RAMPAR branded bicycles and accessories. The bicycle's original saddle would have been and ADGA brand leather one, made in France.

The cycle's Normandy Sport hubs are too early to exhibit a date marking. There will likely be date markings on the machine's Simplex Prestige model derailleurs and Rigida SUPERCHROMIX wheel rims. The wheel rim markings are inside a small diamond symbol. See illustrations below -

first year for this head emblem was 1974

Huret gear mechs are CPSC compliant which provides a date aid

it is possible the Huret bits may carry a date mark - they began dating their products right near to this time. when dated, they carry a four digit number. the first two characters represent the week of the year and the second two characters represent the year -
