1977 Peugeot PY10 CP - worth the price?
Hello all,
I hope your are all well. I found this somewhat rare bike for sale. Likely a 1977. Parts are not all original but seems to be period correct. What do you think? Does it worth the $800 canadian (approx $570 US)? Looks ok to me (maybe a little high?) but I am no expert. Specs are as follow:
- Mavic tubular rims
- Normandy luxe hubs
- Suntour freewheel
- Philippe stem and handlebar
- Stronglight 49D crank
- Mafac 2000 brakes
- Simplex SLJ derailleurs and shifters
- Sedis sedicolor oro chain
- Simplex seat post but not gold
- Ideale 2002 saddle
- Maillard 700 pedals
- Shimano headset
Thanks for your time and comments!!

Thanks very much for posting this seldom encountered model!
The chainset is Stronglight model 93 rather than model 49D.
1977 was the very final year for the model 93. sometime during the year it was superceded by the model 105.
Looks very good.
Owned a 1976 model PY10 in deep flambouyant blue - a very fine machine.
Its chainset was a first generation Stronglight model 99.
Valuation sounds well within reason to me. Others know far better however.

IMO, the price is on the high side of okay if it’s a bike you desire with plans to fix and ride. The price seems too high if you plan to fix it up and one day sell for a profit.
i recently bought a pink Schwinn Super Sport on eBay and with shipping it ended up costing $300. I know this is probably $100 too much in this market but it happened to be an all-original example of a bike I really wanted. I’ll never make money on it but I don’t intend to sell it any time soon.
I think the same sort of logic (or lack thereof!) applies with your Peugeot. I hope you buy it and enjoy it.

Bike prices are higher in Canada than the US. I don't think this price is too high. It's certainly within spitting distance of a decent price.

Check prices for the gold bling parts on E-Bay....you might be surprised by the numbers also if you buy it and are doing any service please resist the urge to unbolt the RD from the front, it will cause you a lot of pain after it shears the pins Simplex RD's unbolt from the rear!
Ben
BTW, I have never seen a gold anodized strong light crank.

fraba,
580 is a strong number and remember asking price is asking price....
It will need a lot of work/service tires tubes etc. etc. so as you already know one would hope there is room to negotiate the number, always try to work the price down.
Keep in mind that for 580 there are a lot of more exotic bikes in that price range so you need to really like/want it or if you don't get it for the number that you can live with there will always be others...be patient.
Good Luck, Ben

Hummm... finally I don’t think it is a PY10. We can clearly see an eyelet on the rear drop out. This would be a PY60... again I am no expert with Peugeot bikes and any comments would be appreciated.
thanks

Gold anodizing looks nice hung on a wall. Riding it regularly, I would be too worried about finding gold replacement parts as they wear out, chainrings in particular.

I wouldn't pay that price. I have a bit of a problem with sellers asking high prices without bothering to at least present the item properly. Tires flat, handlebars turned sideways, not taking a few minutes to at least wipe the dust off the frame. This looks like a bike that has been hanging for years in somebody's basement. Likely that bike sold for less than the current asking price when new back in the 1970's

I agree with you about the presentation. A bike like this at least deserves nice pictures showing all details that can help identify and put an approx date on the frame. But if it's a good bike, I don't care if the seller is proud of it or not

You may not care about the pride the owner has in it, but the point is that the owner isn't interested enough to make it presentable, and may not know enough about it to know how good a bike it is. I see all sorts of old bikes with unrealistic asking prices, but at least they have been fully cleaned up and made to look as good as possible. Personally, I might pay $500 (Canadian) for it, but I would offer somewhat less given the condition, which is a good negotiation point. The bike is not ready to ride as is, would require a full overhaul to make it roadworthy. A shop might charge close to $200 to do that sort of job. A knowledgeable owner would have at least cleaned it up to get top dollar
Cheers!

In the end, it is up to you how much you want it. To get the best possible deal, you have to go in prepared to walk away if the owner is not reasonable. Good news is, that at this price bike flippers will not be interested. Just for comparison, look at this:

To be fair, it is very clean, but this was a $150 bike back in 1972

I thought PY 10 was built with Reynolds 531 Pro (red) tubes, this looks like "regular" 531? Was there a transition year?

Hey Fraba,
I have a 1977 PY10 hanging on the wall in front of me, and the one you are looking it is a PY10. I did a lot of research to confirm mine to be to be a PY10 and the "Prestige Peugeot" decal is a giveaway, See:1974 Peugeot PY10
I thought my crankset was gold anodized too until I started to clean it and found in was just grease or oil that had turned almost to a varnish. Mothers Mag Polish cleaned it up nice. These bikes where all custom ordered and that is why you will see them with different components and different anodizing. The black paint touched up nice with an artist brush and black Tremclad paint. I did not have many scratches though. The biggest differences I see from my bike is the wheels and drilled brake levers, well, and frame size. I paid $300 Canadian about 7 years ago and would not sell it fo $1000. I did a complete overhaul of the bike. Here is mine:

For your info, I decided to pass. However, I learned a lot in the process and after all, learning is part of the pleasure in this hobby. Thanks to you all for sharing!

The bike will not ever be a garage queen, so why worry and the dirtier the better...all of these points, along with the need to replace parts put you in a good bargaining position.
