Miyata 1000 GT pricing

I saw this 1981 Miyata 1000 in near min condition in the local marketplace. I can not post any URLs or photos yet since I have not had at least 10 posts here ( I mostly read threads ). I have 9 posts and maybe if I make a reply here that will make it 10 so I can post some photos later. I do not know the components on it but is says it is all original except the saddle and the tires. It is my perfect size as well. The color is metallic dark green. The asking price is $466 ( $650 CAD ). Is this a good deal, just right or not really.

If it's a bike that would fit you, that you would ride and enjoy, and $466 won't keep you from paying the mortgage, it's probably a good deal. I think we can get hung up on whether something is a "good deal." Have people purchased '81 1000s for less? Yes, and even in mint condition. Can you purchase a new bike for less that would be as nice? Very doubtful.

Thanks so much for your quick reply. The problem with me is I think I would enjoy it more if I upgrade the components as I prefer STI shifters to downtube ones. This will surely set me back a few more dollars. Another question, I guess, is how much would one pay for a mint frame of a Miyata 1000? ( I hope this counts as post $10 for me so I can post the picture next ).

Used a couple times yet the decals are worn and paint chipped ?? I would not consider that excellent condition. My personal opinion is that is not a $650 bike. I think he's fishing after some ebay dreaming. Just one person's opinion. I picked up a 1000 for $250.

Just for perspective, if adjusting for inflation, in today's dollars these things cost around $2000 range new.

That is IMO a fair price. Obviously some people have gotten much more rocking deals. Vintage bikes can be a bargain. Likewise, some have paid considerably more.

However, if you plan to strip it down to the frame and put all modern parts on it, you'll need to respace and realign it. If you can't do this yourself, it may be more practical to go with a more modern frame. For around the same price, you can get various SOMA and VO frames, for a bit more, a Bob Jackson World Tour or a 'starter' Rivendell.

I agree -- I think that's too much, considering what the seller says is original. Those bars are not original; it would have come with drop bars, unless there is something I missed about a Canadian market model.

Looks more like an 82 or '83. Missing original bars, rear rack isn't original, missing front rack.
27" wheels limit your choice of tires. You could probably convert to 700c as long as the cantis could be made fit.
So, not a huge bargain...still, it is a 1000!

Thanks for all your advice. It is amazing how clear my mind becomes after just 3 advices from you guys. I guess I am blinded by the legend of the Miyata 1000 that I turned a blind eye to the details and a few false claims by the seller. I am so happy that I posted here before jumping on it. The fact that the bike is 300 kms away from me was a blessing to begin with. I enjoy reading this forum and I appreciate and value your opinion. Thanks again.
