1980 Nishiki Comp II Touring

i recently bought a couple bikes off a gentleman who said he was the original owner. he didnt say much about the bikes other than that a lot of the components were original, even the leather handle wraps were original which look really cool and unique. he didnt tell me much else about the bikes but he seemed like he took really good care of them because theyre still in great condition. i have not seen any other bikes online that match mine so im trying to find out more about it and price range as well. i wish i could attach photos but apparently i cant attach photos since i havent posted more than ten times. i have a bunch of photos taken that i can share if i get that restriction lifted

Post ten times and you are good to go. Introduce yourself to other groups on this forum and get to know the other folks i.e., road cycling , c&v , general cycling discussions. It won't take long. Someone here can tell you all you need to know about your bike but will probably want pictures .There are people here that probably sold bikes like yours when they were new and have a wealth of information. You can't stump these folks! Joe

Welcome to the forums. The Comp II was Nishiki's mid-range model aimed at fast recreational riders, club racers and lower category, sanctioned competitors. It's definitely not a touring model as the gearing was too narrow, with low gear typically being a 44T chainring paired with a 24T large cog. It was typically 2nd in the product line, just below the Professional, though there were higher uncatalogued models and frames around this time.

The bicycle was designed by WCCS (West Coast Cycle Supply), a California based bicycle importer and distributor. The Nishiki brand first appeared in 1972 but had its origins in WCCS' earlier American Eagle brand. It was built by Kawamura, a well respected Japanese company. It's fairly typical of the of Japanese bicycles of it's level and purpose. The frame is an unspecified, double butted chromium-molybdenum alloy. Seat post sizing suggests one of the Tange Champion sets, though there is some disagreement as to whether it is their #1 or #2 set. The SunTour Cyclone derailleur very lightweight, nicely performing derailleurs. The Sugino Mighty Comp Custom crankset is similarly well respected and desirable for its milled spider flutes and drilled chainrings. The wheels feature high performance Araya 20A 700C rims mated to Sanshin Gyro-Master hubs. Arguably, the one cost concession among the major components are the Dia-Comp 500G brakes, though the drilled levers are a nice touch.

WCCS could have spec'd a smaller spoke protector to give the bicycle a sportier appearance. I think most buyers would remove it, to improve appearance and save a bit of weight, though it is already a quite light bicycle. I don't recall these coming with leather handlebar tape. Very early 1980s seems correct and the serial number will help to corroborate the year.

The bicycle is in very good condition, except for the rotting brake hoods.. Original price would have been around $400US. Current values will vary depending on the Covid-19 effect in your region but pre-pandemic, in an average market, I'd place the price at $250 - $300.

Nishiki Comp II

TMar, thanks for the great write up on this Nishiki. I just found one at a yard sale today and I’m excited to begin the restoration process. It is actually a very nice bike although this one is much too big for me so I will end up passing it on.

I love the Nishiki Comp ll.
I got one new in 1982, it was a $579 bicycle at Gus's bike shop in Hampton NH, I paid $430 on sale and I rode it till 1990. My 30 year old son rides it now, and he refuses to let me give it a makeover.

The frame of this bike looks similar to my 1984 Nishiki International OLE, which I acquired in 2009. It's relatively light and the thin seat and chain stays and thin front fork give it a wonderfully compliant ride. It's responsive without being too twitchy.

I'm thinking this one is a 82 or 83 model based on the components and head badge if you give us the serial number off the bottom bracket the actual maker and manufacture date can be determined. Great bike these have really nice medium ride quality very smooth with great tracking and handling. As for value I would place it around $300 as presented.
