WHAT the???? 5-speed vintage Ming Bike

I call this the "What the ????" bike, because that's one of the first things I thought when I first saw it. Can you help me price this?

I'm now trying to sell this on Ebay. I've sold toys for 20 years, but not many bikes. Sometimes a toy comes along that I expect will fetch a price like 10 times its original value (after increasing it due to inflation, therefore like 20 to 50 times). But the effect is that it's so rare, nobody knows what it is, and so nobody is looking for it.

I know it's kinda late to ask after it's been listed, but I'm still interested in finding the right value in case it doesn't sell.

Title: WHAT THE?? ULTRA-RARE vintage 5-speed ALL-ORIGINAL survivor; ?1989; 20" wheels

It's a 5-speed BMX-like bike of the size Junior BMX, or maybe expert BMX.

I'll just cut and paste some of the relevant description in the auction: " What the ????: 5-speed on a BMX-like bike? The seller owned a Huffy with the cowboy banana seat from about 1975; one of the first Thruster bikes ever made -in about 1977-; and a GT pro performer from about 1987. The seller has seen hundreds of Huffy and Murray bikes in the 80's and 90's, but never recalled seeing anything like this. There was a cheap BMX bike (Murray or something) from about 1987 with a grip shifter, but it was only 2-speeds. Seller guesses this was Ming's answer to newly-emerging multi-speed gearing of mountain bikes of the time, but for 10-14 year-olds bigger frames weren't considered yet.
What makes it extremely rare? 1) excellent condition for its age 2) it's a 5-speed; 3) Girl's bicycle; 4) Made in Taiwan. You probably won't find another one like it on Ebay in the next several months. The original owner was available for comment. This was bought from Venture in Calumet City Illinois in about 1989 or 1990, which makes this 32-33 years old. That's over 25 years old, so it's vintage. If you don't think shifters on BMX bikes are rare, just go to advanced search and try [shifter bmx bike] or [derailer bmx bike]. See many bikes in the results?

Also, check out the multi-colored yellow-to-pink fade on the frame. Not so easy to do in 1989. Click back between pictures 1 and 2. See the weird contrast in the parts? Probably meant to be safe riding day and night. The frame states, "Ming Bike California" [see picture 5].
"

Please respond. Thanks
Ridgewood

That is a very low end bike, it's has zero collectors value. It would cost more to make rideable than it would ever be worth.

+1, this has zero collectability. It's cheap, child's ATB style bicycle. The type you by at Toys 'R Us for $59.95 and sell at yard sales for $10 when your kid outgrows. Ad is full of BS.

It's almost impressive the Buy it Now price is 100 times the actual value. And $22 for this thing is being generous. Rare ≠ valuable.

Thanks for your response. So you're suggesting that the things that make vintage bikes valuable are that it's high quality, and that it's rideable. Why wouldn't other factors make it valuable, such as rarity of brand; rarity of design; where it was made; and age?

For example, I see some vintage Huffys sell for over 1000, and those are low quality. Some Huffy parts can fetch over $100. EOM

Okay you asked what it's worth and people commented.... but perhaps you can get top dollar at $2,200. If you feel that's what it's worth that, that's what it's worth to you. That's akin to asking price for a low end Chinese titanium frame. Good luck to you. BTW.

No ebay sales allowed on BF.
