1963 Rene Herse

Most of my collection has comparable sales and I can come up with a fair market value. This bike (and one other) is a bit harder to pinpoint a price on. This is 100% NOT for sale, please don't PM me.

1963 Rene Herse, with 95% original parts from the same era, Huret, Stronglight, Philippe, Campy "No Record" hubs, ect. I added the racks and brass fenders.

That’s a beautiful bicycle. I am always amazed at the level of detail on the RH frames.

Just a note, the right rear brake pad is installed backwards.

I'm surprised we haven't gotten more responses about this beautiful bike. Perhaps @Vonruden might have a finger on the pulse of Herse prices.
I'm also surprised at the number of fairly tall Herse and Singer bikes that show up from time to time. My size: Color me envious. (green I suppose)

Pretty sure I owned this one and sold on ebay cause it was a tad too small. If so, Looks much better then when I owned.

Yes, this is your old bike, thank you for selling it. I was looking for a RH for awhile and honestly could be on a taller one, they just don't come up for sale very often.

I did add a few things and clean it a bit, I really like how original it was.

You did really well with it. If it was larger, I would never have sold it. As it sits, I would say $4 - 5K range. you just canít find em to often in larger sizes. If it were mine, I would get the reproduction Herse Stem and cranks.

I've been toying with that idea but I like the original parts of the era and repro part can always be bought later on. I just need to get some RH tires.

Very nice bike. I know nothing about these bikes other than that. I like the brass fenders with the color of the frame. I have just finished my Motobecane in a burnt metallic orange/red and am ordering hammered copper(plated) fenders for it for the same type of look. It will be my only French touring bike other than my daughter’s bike that is in my fleet.

Sounds like a good choice on the fenders. Please post some photos when you get them installed. I'm sure I'm not the only one who'd like to see it!

It's a "Federal" model, the least expensive, exported out of country of origin, evidenced by the "made in France" painted on the downtube..
It would Not have had RH stem or cranks or brakes. It is originally and specifically a modest yet fully functional build. As a result, it lacks the numerous RH "upgrades" such as,
chrome, filled or filleted over lugs and BB shell, SKF bearings, chain stay protector, lights and associated internal wiring, internal brake or der cables, etc...even the seat binder
bolt is generic rather than a "maison specific" bolt.

Federals are not common, as most clients came to Herse for the "extras". So they are fairly rare. Plain silver aluminum fenders, or even plastic Bluemels, possibly red, would have come
on it. Bluemels were a popular choice when not needing the wiring for lights.

The front rack installed sits way too high, get a correct fitting one somehow. Actually both racks are wrong, but it's a solvable issue.
The fender attachment hardware is way wrong, fix it. Use the traditional method/hardware.

The bike is a lovely survivor, no irreversible mods and in good condition. Enjoy the truth of it's existence, and if possible, avoid the
temptation to make it what it isn't.

If the front rack is way too high, it should be way lower; and if it were way lower, it would crush the mudguard. Putting aside "way", how is it too high? It looks good to me.

As for the rear rack, it looks to me as if the only thing preventing it from starting to rotate is the resistance offered by the mudguard to a bolt. I hope I'm wrong. (I probably am.)

M A V , the bike looks just right for 150+ km rides. How does it feel?

Quite the contrary, in fact a lowered (original RH or competent copy) f/rack will have a threaded stud underneath to support the fender, no crush. Same with the rear....
Take a close look at any RH w/original racks.

By "wrong", did you perhaps just mean "not as originally built/intended"?

(There are vanishingly few Herse bikes hereabouts for me to ogle. Perhaps there's one Herse bike on the road for every fifty Cherubim bikes, and one Cherubim bike for every fifty Specialized bikes. And while I know of the recent coffee-table book about Herse bikes, my bookshelves are already groaning.)

If indeed a set-up is not as originally built/intended, well, that's not necessarily a bad thing if the bike is for riding rather than display. I imagine that the (non-Herse!) frame I'm riding these days would originally have been fitted with Sturmey-Archer or Benelux Cyclo gearing: I might consider switching to either if it appeared under a Christmas tree, but the bike and I are happy with Suntour gearing that's more than a decade younger.
