Tell me it's awful and not worth the money I don't have. And yes, the owner will include the original rigid fork. Maybe I could sell the suspension fork for a couple bucks? {sigh} It's a sickness.

Rigid fork is a huge plus. It almost never happens that way.
Could you get anything for the old suspension fork? If it's in good shape, sure. Post it on the giant auction site and see what happens.
I think these spec'd with cantis, so a V-brake conversion as well.
Go for it, and enjoy your new root beer float.

If the wheels and 9 speed drive train are in good shape I would say it's worth the price with both forks.

$300 is probably market price in SoCal in this post covid time. The suspension fork is probably worth $60-$80 in a local sale.

As mentioned above, if the wheels and drivetrain are good..with both forks..hard to say no. I have a '93 970 that I did a drop bar conversion on into a touring bike..wonderful ride loaded or unloaded.
One thing to note..in 1994 they increased the top tube length of the 900 series models by 1.5-2+cm. You might take a look at the spec manuals on the Trek archive for 1993 and 1995 and check the top tube lengths.

Good point on the top line on the root beer one does have fairly long top line and the setup is fairly aggressive somewhat typical of a lot of high end mid 90's MTB's.
