1987 Lotus Excelle Sport Series - help me determine condition and value?

Hi folks.

I have a gorgeous blue 1987 Lotus Excelle Sport Series.

I now have some health problems that make riding a bicycle just a stupid choice. Lol. Have decided to reduce risk of injuring back and hips so that I will be able to continue to walk the rest of my life, barring any other stupid things happening.

So it's time to sell the Lotus. I don't want to price it low enough that some random person who doesn't understand what they're buying would get it and maybe not take care of it decent. And I don't want to leave money on the table. I'm an unpaid caregiver and funds are tight.

So if anybody out there knows enough to be able to help me grade whether it's in good condition or very good condition and chime in on what they think it would go for in the Midwest of the USA I really appreciate it.

I probably won't post it until March.

I'm posting a couple pictures. I have quite a few. I'm not sure how many is appropriate to post here. I'm also not sure what all pictures are serious buyer would want to see.

Sorry but the primary picture of the bike as a whole is at the very bottom of the images. I couldn't find a way to reorder them. But I want to be able to give you a good information for valuing and the condition.

Many thanks for any informed individual who can help.

You have the problem that it is a fantastic bike, on a very soft market, with a very small cult following. Does it has the Lotus branded toe straps? Not that it will add a lot of value but it would be a really sweet touch.

Hard to tell. You may get $200, which would be a crying shame because it is a really sweet ride that should be worth more (I could be wrong). On this market getting good money out of less known marquee bikes is like trying to squeeze water out of a rock. I have several bikes that I would price on the top end of their range not because I want to make as much money as possible, but because I want to find them a good owner. That of course means that they will take longer to move which is fine, I'm not in a hurry.

On the other hand there is a point that selling them for much less they don't move all that much faster. Pretty much giving them away to a random stranger can lead to the bike sleeping outside until it rusts away.

Suggest that you offer more specificity on your location, if you want any useful data in reply -- at least some idea of your local population. There's quite a big difference, for example, between the bike markets in Chicago and some little farm town. You probably couldn't give it away in the latter, but in the former, you might find someone willing to part with a couple hundred bucks for it.

A willingness to ship it will render that moot, and bring a higher price.

This Excelle brought $130 (after commission) on eBay, and is missing a number of important parts.

Thanks for the feedback.

Bike is located in Dayton Ohio and it has been said we have the most miles of paved bike trails in the country. So there are plenty of avid cyclists around however Lotus devotees I don't know...

And yes they are the original Lotus branded toe straps. : ).

Yeah I'd rather hang on to it than have somebody buy it for not very much money and not respect it.

I did have a man come to the house yesterday to buy my rowing machine. It turns out he works at one of the local bike shops. He said during COVID I probably could have got 450 or 500 for it, but now he expects it is probably $250 if I found an excited lotus person or maybe 200 for somebody who knows what they are and can appreciate it. So I think I'll list it next spring for 250 and see what happens.

Thanks much everyone.

Going to be a sad day when she leaves the house.

Like the others I'd say the value isn't much despite how nice that looks. Lotus just isn't that well regarded widely unfortunately.

There's been a couple of higher end mint models for sale fairly cheap in the C&V section for awhile now with no takers. At least the Esprit is mint. I'm even lusting after it myself but I know if I don't like the ride and go to pass it on I'm probably going to lose a couple of hundred dollars. Plus I just don't have room for it right now.

Many of us cringe when we see a kickstand. Too often that means damaged chainstays.

The threaded item sticking out above the detailleur is too long.

The high end safety turkey lever brakes with nice white hoods are very interesting.
