1957 Schwinn Super Sport

Hi all! New here and don't know a ton about bikes. I tried to research in these threads but didn't see anyone posting this model from the 50's. My great uncle moved into a retirement home and I'm cleaning out his house. Found this Schwinn Super Sport - according to an online serial number lookup, it's from August 1957 - if those are accurate. I know nothing about what parts are original or what he changed out. The frame is in pretty good condition with some minor scuffs, and of course needs a good cleaning. Any help/insight into what I should try to sell it for would be greatly appreciated!

EDIT: Looks like I'm not allowed to post photos yet cause I'm new. The Serial Number is 3E07271. The color is a light blue.

Agree - looks like a 1980s bike. Definitely not from the 1950s.

The Serial number database is leading you astray on this one, it is not a '57, your bike matches with the 1983 in the Schwinn catalog. The Super Sport was third from the top in the Schwinn line-up that year, behind the Paramount (not in catalog linked) and Superior. https://bikehistory.org/catalogs/1983.html Here is a link to a bunch of pics of a really nice one https://thecabe.com/forum/threads/sc...t-1983.215442/

It's a 1983 model, made by Panasonic, hence the Panasonic serial number on the head tube: "3E" = May 1983.

For a 1983 Super Sport that looks pretty good overall:

Asuming the wheels are straight (i.e., that the rims aren't damaged) and that the rest of the parts are in good condition, I'd ask around $100 and be prepared to take $70 or so as is. Cleaned up so that it presents well, maybe $25 more or so.

...they're good, solid, Japanese production bikes from an era when quality mattered. I've had one or two myself. But none of this C+V classic steel stuff sells at much of a premium any more. If everything works, and the rubber parts and mechanicals are in good shape, maybe $250-300 to a buyer who, like your great uncle, is pretty tall. That's a very large frame. So it might be harder to sell. If I were you, I wouldn't spend a whole lot of money or time making it better. You won't get compensated for that when you sell it. Maybe clean it up (little investment there), and see if everything works (it might).

Then advertise locally on CL for $150 as is. Be prepared to take less, because anyone who buys it with the intention of riding it will have to put time and money into it before doing so.

In the 80’s, Super Sport was Schwinn’s mid-level racer. One step up from the beloved Tempo but regularly seen for sale at prices less than a Tempo. Good C&V value for the buyer, not so much for the seller.

I bought my very clean 1986 Super Sport for $165 and it stays permanently mounted to my indoor trainer. I have no idea how it behaves on the road. I suspect it feels just like my Tempo but with better components. OP’s Super Sport is probably worth $150 +/- $25 but needs a clean up. If I were selling, I would take off the rack and sell it separately.

Thank you all for the info! Glad I posted and didn't believe that serial number converter. I'll list it around the prices suggested and see what kind of bites I get.
