Basso Lotto

Ok, not sure if this qualifies as C&V but here it goes. This Basso Lotto on CL in my area and it seems like it could be well worth the 100.00 the guy is asking. I am not familiar with Basso but having Shimano 600 seems like it's pretty decent. What do you guys think, worth picking up?

edit: Sorry I removed the link since I am trying to get it. Maybe this is bad of me.... but I want this bike bad!

Thanks,
Matt

You neeed to be camped out atthe seller's door RIGHT now. Bring coffee, it might help.

Serioously, that is a steal. The frame alone is worth a lot more than the asking price.

lotek 12-04-08 07:54 AM

jeebus thats a good deal. Basso Lotto? excellent frame. Do as Tx says, go camp out
and buy it. then post lots of pictures.

Ok guys here is the deal, I got a response but it's not what I was hoping. I still have a shot at getting it, but it won't be for 100.00. I am waiting on her to name a price and what I am asking you is... what is fair? I don't want a "flip" value, I am looking for a "plan on keeping" value. I have some nice guitar equipment I may consider selling for this one...

I think this just got bumped over to the valuation section.

It also sounds like the seller got so many responses that they are now thinking they can get more and are fishing for offers.

But without pics (you removed the linkage), details, inclusions, exclusions, condition, dings or dents or lack thereof, it is really hard to value a bike or frame based on name and model alone.

So, with that said, I'd recon $3.50 to $350, or somewhere in that range depending upon variables and your desire to own it.

mkeller234 12-04-08 09:43 AM

Treebound, I am sorry if I upset you at all, it's not intended. I didn't post this in the value section originally because my original question didn't concern a dollar amount. I am not happy with the turn of events concerning this bike but I am trying to prepare myself by gathering info. The CL ad has been pulled by the seller, I did however keep pictures on my computer and some of the details in a notepad doc. I will post them in a seperate reply. Please feel free to move my thread as the purpose has changed, and again I am sorry.

Here are the details:

Moving to Value thread.....

sonatageek 12-04-08 10:16 AM

Response from the seller from my inquiry about the bike:

"I thank you for inquiring about the bike. I have removed it from Craig's List at this time, as it was published prematurely. As stated in the posting, I love this bike and only meant to publish if my other items don't sell within a week. I had several inquiries alerting me that it was there, and I was mortified! You were #( ) on the list, and to be fair because of my screw up, I will contact all who inquirwed before i republish it.

Thanks for understanding and sorry for your inconvenience."

So a mistake or is she now fishing?

mkeller234 12-04-08 10:22 AM

thats what I'm saying.... is this her bike or someone else's. My guess is she HAD no idea what she had.

It was the 'old bike' used on the trainer, so, what could that be worth?

I'm not upset, not upset at all, I guess I need to add smileys or something, oh well.
And I'm not a moderator so I'm not a mover of threads, I was just giving you a heads-up that the shift in focus from being about the bike to being about the value of the bike would probably trigger a move of the thread.
Let's see now, :50::bday::saweeet::ride::speedy::commute::winter:
There, that should alude any stern implications in my post :D

As to value, that's a hard thing to pin down sometimes. While I'd like to have a Basso, I've never owned one and don't know how they value out in auctions. I do know I was just watching a late 80's Trek 560 with an opening bid of $125 on ebay that just closed a couple of minutes ago for a final price of around $187 or so. I'm not saying the Trek 560 is comparable to the Basso, but it does give a frame of reference.

The top tube pic shows what looks like a little rust and missing paint in front of where the cable exits the tubing, also the cable housing appears to have some cracking in it, so at the very least I'd say the Basso is a candidate for a complete tear-down and overhaul and add in some new cable housings. That rust and paint flaking is also in a location where crashed bikes tend to flex and/or bend so I'd get a close look at the downtube as well if you can to see if there is similar paint flaking, if not then the top tube issue might just be from cable rub, but if the downtube has any similar appearance then the bike might have rammed something enough to flex the frame even if it didn't leave a permanent bend in the tubing - so it could be minor, or it could be more, but is something to look at closer in person.

I won't comment on the paint color except to say that if you like the coloring and can live with the Salmon/Pink on it then that's all that matters in that regard. :)

And I just noticed in your text that the ad said the bike was primarily an indoor bike for the past few years, so I'd wager that is where the rusty area came from as it's close to where chin sweat would drop onto the frame. I've seen pics of trainer-mounted bikes where the entire top tube had a major rust line down the center which is why you might see a lot of people hang towels over their trainer-mounted bikes.

My gut feel is that if you can get it for $200 then you would have probably done well. Beyond that and I'll let the Basso experts answer. :thumb:

luker 12-04-08 10:32 AM

yeah, she's sellin' her ex's stuff. Ask her what she wants for that nasty Kompressor in the driveway.

mkeller234 12-04-08 10:42 AM

Guess what?!? She listed it on ebay.... I probably shouldn't even post this, but my guilty consience is too much. I wrote her again and asked her if she would consider pulling the auction, and at what price. I didn't want to advertise this auction cause I know once a bid is in it can't be pulled... but I feel too bad not to fully disclose.

treebound 12-04-08 10:42 AM

ps, here's a link to a Basso Gap frameset on ebay that's in my watch list. I'm not going to bid on it, just watching it for a price point check, but I suspect it will quickly exceed my current budget.

mkeller234 12-04-08 10:46 AM

Whats wrong with the color scheme! I have worn pink shirts so I have no qualms with being laughed at. I'm glad I didn't upset you Treebound, last I want to do is be THAT guy on top of being a newb.

Matt

treebound 12-04-08 10:52 AM

Nothing is wrong with the color scheme. :thumb: Just not something I would personally get. :o

Also, it looks like you've still got a chance to get it locally:

No Reserve
This item is also for sale locally.
Seller reserves the right to end auction any time prior to sale.
If you fit a size 58 frame and if you had the budget for it I'd jump all over that other Basso frameset for under $300, looks real clean.

mkeller234 12-04-08 11:06 AM

Yeah, I was hesitant to mention the auction for that reason. I decided to though because I would rather not get the bike over being dishonest, that is not a reputation I am looking to build. This bike was attractice because it was complete, I have a Raleigh Pro frame set already and still have to build it up. If I don't get it, it wasn't meant to be....and I KNOW there will be others!! HEY! did you send my huffy scout out yet... just kidding:thumb:

Nope, tomorrow is Friday, I'll swing by there to see if it's still outside or if it got shoved into their shed due to the snows we just had and the additional snows that are forecast for this weekend. If it's still there I'll try to at least take a pic of it for you. ;)

I really was just kidding. That bike is hardly worth the 3.00, let alone the cost and time to ship it.

treebound 12-04-08 03:12 PM

Yeah, I know, just kidding along too. ;)
