Schwinn Prologue_Campy components_Value?
 

I have a '88 or '89 Prologue, (the red and white one). Tange Prestige tubing, Campy components are: crankset, deraillers, hubs and clincher wheels,(Omega Strada Hardox), seat post, brakes and 1 Campy brake hood, the other one is gone. I guess it's Campy Record but I am not an expert on that. There is the # 42 inside a square on the inside of the crank arm, 172.5mm long.
Superbee down tube shift levers. Tange Falcon headset. Look pedals.
Cinelli stem and bars, no name saddle, tires that are rideable. Wheels are 90% true.
It has paint nicks but overall is in good shape and rides just fine.

I don't know if I want to ride it or sell it. It's a 56cm, maybe 57? and I could really use about 1" more frame size as the seat post is now beyond it's limit to get full leg extension.


Any ideas on it's value? If I sell should I make it much nicer_as in new tires, bar tape, add the missing brake hood or just leave it and list it?

Looks like a sweet bike! If I were gonna sell it I'd get it rideable and cleaned up a bit. New bartape, cables, tires and brake pads if needed and a quick lube...I'd try for at the very least $300 but the market is slowing down right now. Spring and Summer is when you wanna sell for quickest sale and best price. The amount you'll get depends on your location unless you sell via eBay which can be a pain......I'd personally just get a taller post and ride the tar outa it 'cause that really is a sweet bike....

If you like the bike, just get a longer seat post. The height of the seat post is part of the fit and the amount of post showing is not a fashion statement.

I'm not an expert, but I think the Prologue is a relatively rare frameset. That doesn't necessarily mean it would bring a fortune on the open market, but it's fairly unique.

Tange Prestige tubing is some nice stuff. I believe the Prologue was second in line behind the Paramount. I'd say keep it and ride it.

As I see it the bike has alot of issues most of which can fixed relatively cheaply. Flat tire, possible mismatched tires, bad hoods, mismatched bottle cages, 'subjective' handlebar tape.

As kpug mentioned maybe in the $300 range......

I rode the bike and it seems to be about as light as a steel frame can be. It accelerates fast, handles well and soaks up bumps nicely. I think I will ride it.

I am pretty good at wrapping handle bars but have never had to replace a brake hood. I don't think I would get a new pair of Campy hoods, sounds expensive. Any ideas on replacement hoods?

I will get tires as well, any suggestions on decent lightweight and durable? I have had Gatorskins and got a slice in 1 of them and they are kind of pricey.

I will clean it up and enjoy it. Yeah, I think the existing handlebar tape is "subjective", That's a mild way to say it sucks and I agree.

You might be better off buying a new set of brake levers (Cane Creek SCR-5 or Tektro R200a are both relatively affordable). I'm not sure where you would find replacement hoods for those Campy aero levers, but you're probably right that they would be expensive. You might look for a pair of used levers with good hoods on ebay.

As for tires, what do you consider affordable? Generally, a higher cost tire gets you higher threads per inch, which gives the tire less rolling resistance, making it feel faster. But many of these tires are not very durable. I think tubulars provide the least rolling resistance, permit higher inflation pressures, and corner better than clinchers. But the good ones are very, very expensive.

Lots of people like Gatorskins, but if you don't think they are durable enough, you'll have to get some touring specific tires, like Schwalbe Marathons or Continental Top Touring...but those are not fast road tires, and I don't think they come in narrow widths.

Lots of people like Continental GP 4000s or Michelin Krylion Carbons, which you can find for between $25-$35 a piece online. Some like Michelin ProRace, but they are more expensive and more susceptible to cuts.

Below $20, I like Michelin Dynamics, Continental Ultra Sports and Panaracer Pasela TGs, but they are not really performance oriented tires, and they aren't particularly flat resistant (though the Pasela TGs are slightly better in my experience).
