Fair price for Trek 1200?

It's listed on CL as 58cm

"I also have the computer (odometer, trip meter, average mph, mph, date, stopwatch), 5 extra tires (2 paired 1 oddball), new handlebar wraps, a small bag under the seat, and a small hand pump that clips to the frame.

I only rode the bike for two seasons and I did a minor tune-up every 100 to 250 miles and major tune-up at the beginning of each season. Compared to the 20 year old 54cm road bike I rode before this bike is amazing! It was lighter, had better stopping power, and was much faster with more speeds. Itís been stored indoors for the last 2 years. Iíve been focused on other things and have stopped cycling."

The guy, when I emailed him, told me he had someone interested in buying it for $625 but if I paid $650 and picked it up tomorrow/today he'd give it to me. I told him I could get one on ebay for ~500 but to send me pics anyway. I'm not sure he actually has someone else looking at as he just sent me the pictures and told me he's open to negotiation.

Looking for a replacement bike for someone who's 5'10 and whose trek 1420 was stolen in the spring.. without spending all my savings.

You should probably post your question to the Road Cycling forum, because this Trek is a modern bike. For what it's worth, I purchased a similarly equipped Giant with some upgrades from a friend for $550, which was probably too much. I'd say $450-$500 is ballpark.

You might also look into something like bikesdirect.com: similarly equipped NEW bikes with a warranty. Only caveat is that they arrive needing some minor assembly and oftentimes some minor adjustments.

Here's one for $500 shipped similar to what you're looking at, but which would definitely have a poorer resale value than a Trek (but also less theft appeal):

Oh, yeah, and verify the frame size. Looks smaller than a 58cm to me...but a 56cm could also work for someone 5'10".

Price would be out of line high around here. I am 5-11 and ride a 56. I passed on a similarly equipped Jamis (all Tiagara 9 speed STI) for $200 earlier this week, but that bike was a deal. I quibbled a little too long and someone else snapped it up.

Fair price in season, $450 to $500, but we are not in season (so it would sell for less right now).

Wow, your market is flooded with deals! Market here is dead. Snow on the ground last couple weeks - can't imagine why!

+1,
but if the 2 extra pairs of tires that come with the bike are new and a decent tire, then we are talking at least $100 in new tires. Still $650 is nuts because you can buy a brand new aluminum road bike with that kind of money this time of the year

Got a little snow around here as well. 18 inches last Saturday, took this picture this morning. A little different weather than my avatar.

the cost of living is extremely low here but there aren't that many bikes available either...

also, I posted on the road bike thread but getting no responses.

Not to get too personal, but...has this guy proposed to you? $500 is a pretty spendy gift for a boyfriend...I think you should try to stick to your initial target of $200 or so. Or just take him out to dinner. We won't tell him you were considering a bike!

No I'm not wanting to spend $500. I figure the guy might be desperate and go down to like 300.

And he knows I want to get him a bike because I've been making him go try some that I find (found one good one... was too small. meh.)

Okay, I'll go back to minding my own business.

It would definitely be a deal at $300 if you can negotiate it.

$650 for that Trek is high. Consider that for another $120 you can buy a 27 speed brand new brand name LBS bike with warranty and fitted to your build. I don't care how much he rode it, that's too high. I just picked up two brifter bikes a Bianchi with full Campy and a Cannondale combined for much less than the $625 this dude wants for the Trek. If I paid $500 for that bike it would be because it's pristine and it's the model/color I've been looking for. Realisticly, that's about a $450 bike at best just like Junk Yard Bike said it was. If he really has a buyer at $625, then maybe you should let someone else overpay.
Keep in mind "Someone interested at $625" could be someone who looked at the bike, heard the price and ran. I'll bet the bike is still available next week.

Man, send me $500 and I'll send you a Cannondale R800 with 2x8 STI 105 in nice shape, including shipping, Look pedals, cleats, and a free T-shirt.

That's my way of saying it's overpriced for eastern NC. A Trek 1600 went a while ago for $450, and that was a lot more bike than that 1200.

Its worth 40% of its original MSRP give or take plus 50% of MSRP for the extras. NOT a penny more.
