Trek 400 Question
During what years were the Trek 400s made of Mangaloy? I know this might be a broad question but for some reason all the CL listers around me know very little about what they are selling and post no pics. The listing simply says,
"This road/touring bike in a very nice shade of dark blue has a #400 and is in very fine cond., with only a small amount of wear on the seat.
It has 'Mangaloy label; French rims, and a well known bike shop (in Rochester) label. The tires
are in very good cond., and there is a rack over the rear tire. This is a superior bike at an excellent price."
I talked to him on the phone and he didnt even know what size the tires were, but he told me that it had upright bars and he thinks those were original. I only ask these ridiculous questions because this bike is a little over an hour away and I want it to be worth it. Thanks all

It should have a Reynolds 531 sticker near the FD.

The only year that Trek made a blue 400 with Tange Mangalloy frame was 1983

I'd hold out for an 86 or 87, which have 531 main triangle; This 83 has 27 inch weeks as weel

Not all 400s had 3 tubes 531. The '83 was Tange Mangalloy, for instance. I'm not going to look up all of 'em. The OP can do that

Thanks, I'm on the vintage trek site right now as well, I just found out that 1983 was the first use of Mangaloy, stsrting with the 400 models. The guy just called me back and its got 27"tires and downtube shifters so now I am debating if its worth the 1hr20min drive to check it out. for 100 bucks IDK...what do you guys think?

Given that that bike would get $250-300 without too much drama here in L.A. on craigslist, I'd get in the car right now. YMMV.

If it's the right size and you intend to keep the bike, yes.
If it's a bike you intend to flip, no.

I am looking at it to keep as a commuter/weekend tourer so I think I'll take the drive tomorrow.

On the other hand, these clueless sellers often are just as clueless about value. That can cut both ways. Some think any Schwinn must be a Paramount, and worth $1000. Others think their bike is old, tired, out of date, can't be fixed, trash, etc.
I bought a Trek 620 from such a seller last year. They had no idea what model, year, size, or any other feature on the bike, even though the model number: "620" was clearly labeled on the chainstay.

Welcome to the wonderful world of Craigs List. Clueless sellers RULE. Most apparently can't even use a tape measure or read a label.

I picked up a Trek 720 last week after the seller told me over the phone it was a "Trex"

I sold one in Portland for $200 in 1998 or so. Could probably get double that today in the same locale.

You do have to appreciate those CListers, the guy in Cleveland just dropped the price of his Shogun to $2000!

What a wasted trip that was!!!!!!!! It takes almost 2 hours to get there and the bike, which he said was 22 inches and good for someone 5'9 is the absolute smallest road bike I have ever seen!!!! It looked like it was custom made for a tween. Too disappointing for me to go on about this...

I had a Trek 400 with a really small 18 inch frame. Easy flip size, as there are more buyers than sellers of such small frame bikes. Sold my 18 inch to a gal that was 5-1.

I can tell you're not in Raleigh. By tomorrow, a Trek 400 for $100 would be gone. In fact in the one hour it would take you to get to the dude's house it would be gone.

Hey, does anyone know where to find the right seat tube decal for Tange Mangaloy for that bike? Mine is missing. I've got the silver version. Very nice bike.

+10 Around here, it would be gone quick. And a small size to boot, gone even faster. Same goes for any vintage steel Trek road bike, regardless of model, wheel size, tubing type, etc.
