Specialized Rock Cross-Collector Interest Item?
 

In a distant storage location I have an old Specialized Rock Cross or Cross Rock model bike not sure of which name). I couldn't find anything about this model on the internet and am hopeful someone knows more about this model, even if I can't post a photo due to its location? I'd guess it is roughly an 88-89 model and when I purchased it used, I was told by the owner that it was only made for a few years, was quite rare, and was one of the first attempts of a hybrid bike-road bike combo. It is equiped with a Suntour drive train, to include friction bar-end shifters (triple crank) and Dia Compte brakes. It runs 26 X 1.5 tires on specialized rims and has a nice rear rack, so it makes a nice touring bike/commuter. I just noticed that stumpjumpers were gaining interest and was wondering if this model was of any special interest as well?

Not long ago I had a Specialized Street Stomper. Basically a MTB frame with more street worthy components. There was no special interest in this extremely rare version by Specialized. I have not seen the "Stumpy Effect" spreading to other models in the line and, honestly, I don't expect to see it happen. That said, good condition, rigid fork MTBs with index shifting are seeing some price creep. The old standard of flip'em for $100 seems to have become a bargain price. I'm seeing prices for nice bikes going more toward the $125-$150 mark, but I haven't tested that market. All I can say is bikes at the $100 mark seem to move right out with no price haggle.

Ok, thank-you for the info. I think I'll just keep it and drop some panniers on it for day trips, as it will do roads or light off-road and even some decent hills reasonably well. especially with a triple crank.

a ROCK CROSS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! OMG! I have been trying to think of that name off and on for months. I only ever saw two of those. I think however they were a IIRC '90-'91 product. the shop I worked in bought two, we managed to sell one, to a regular customer, and thankfully the other got stolen from a 'sidewalk sale'. we had a good laught over that, all the much nicer road bikes and he stole that dog. anyway it was, aside from being suntour, equipped like a rockhopper, hence the name, but as roccobike said was aimed at the 'cross market. while they are rare simply because not alot were made, I would not value them anymore than a rockhopper.

the street stomper was a shortlived bike to. very low end narrow tires. the Hybrid certainly killed that off.

Thanks, you made my day! I'm gonna put some rear bags on this bike and enjoy it's uniqueness until the wheels fall off or the suntour bar end shifters die, more likely scenario.
