Need Help - Old Trek
I'm a novice and know little about bikes. I do like the vintage steel treks, however, and I have two others. I'm thinking of buying the bike at the link below, but the owner doesn't know the model and year. I would appreciate any feedback.

Go to https://www.vintage-trek.com it will have tons of information.
With the serial number of the bike, located on the bottom bracket, you should be able to identify the bike easily.

Start with older models. It looks like it does not have braze-on bottle cage mounts. That makes it around 1982 or older.

BTW, that looks like a nice bike and he's added new tires, bar tape, chain etc. Still that's top dollar for that bike. But it is a nice bike.

It is very hard to tell what model this is, just from the pictures. The problem is that the earlier Treks came in an array of colors and colors were not model specific. If you can find what components it has and what is the frame material, there should be a sticker somewhere on the seat tube, it will help. Also look for 2 letter date codes of the components (unless they are campagnolo, in which case, just grab it and take no prisoners). Regardless, the bottom line Treks of that era were made with Ishiwata 022 steel, which is pretty nice to say the least...

I would guess it is a 412. Decent bike, I had two last year (a 1981 and a 1982). The 1982 had bottle braze ons on the down tube, the 1981 did not. So I will guess this one is a 1980 or a 1981 model.
The price is out of line, even during bike season, which it is not. I kind of hope he gets it, as it is a good sign for this year's market if he does.
The serial number will tell you exactly what the bike is. The vintage Trek site is outstanding.
The vintage steel Treks do seem to continue to increase in value. They are popular for sure.
Looks like a lower end swaged crankset.
