90's Trek 1220 -- Help me before I pay too much!

I came across an older but early 90s Trek 1200 aluminum road bike. It's all original and first owner.

The bike is in a day-glo fluorescent yellow color, with Shimano RX-100 components. I believe it is 7 speed (indexed).

The seller described it as perfect and mint, but is selling it for $400.

For me, the price seems pretty steep, especially for an older aluminum road bike.

Any inputs? How much can/should I talk him down to?

I would say make an offer. I was looking at Trek 1200's on ebay and 400 sounds kind of pricey.

Its a $200 to $250 bike around here if it is in superb condition. Not sure seller will be in that territory, so you will have to decide how much you want the bike. If it was a steel Trek, the value would be better.

Note, my estimate assumes it is not a brifter bike. Brifter bike valuations from the 1990s start at around $300. Description does not sound like a brifter bike.

Is the bike a 1200 or a 1220?? 1992 1200 was yellow with DT RX100 shifters.

does it have brifters (shifters / breaks combined on handlebars) or downtube shifters? I sold a 1220 last fall with brifters (all Rx100) for $400 in a hot market took 2 weeks. If it has downtube shifters, it is worth a good amount less.

$400 is too much for any vintage aluminum bike, unless it has a full Dura Ace, Sante or Campy C Record/Chorus.

Thanks for the replies. I will try to talk him down.

The bike has indexed shifters on the downtube. It's definitely a 1200 judging by the pictures. Also if it helps, it says "USA" on the seatstay.

Just to update everyone, I'm going to pass on this one.

I tried talking the guy down, even to $300, and the guy won't budge. $375 at the lowest, which is still way too much for an ordinary bike like this.

Good call. Keep looking and you will find something nicer and cheaper. Careful though, I'm not sure where you are but bike prices are going to double around here in the next couple weeks.

And just for comparison, I justed picked up a nearly mint 1990 1000 that was purchased new, ridden for a charity ride and then put in the garage for 20 years. I will be looking to get around $300 for it come warmer weather because it is so perty.
