Selling a Bianchi Sport SX

So I bought this bike last fall and I like it very much, but I'm leaving the country for a year or more and as much as I enjoy the bike, I'd rather turn it into money for travel than have it sit around the whole time while I'm gone. Plus my next bike investment when I do come back home will probably be a touring bike, which I'm more interested in than road biking.

Anyway, here's a pic:

The bike is, i think, somewhere from late 80s to early 90s. Some parts I think are original (downtube shifters and the whole drivetrain); the wheels presumably aren't since the front rim is Mavic, the rear Araya, but I can't see anymore info on the rims or hubs so I can't go into detail. Shimano exage caliper brakes. A bunch of parts are also nearly new as detailed below.

When I got it it was in fine working condition, but the pedals were some kind of old clipless that everyone who looked at them said were incompatible with modern shoes; the brake levers weren't working real great (and the hoods were falling apart), and the tires were pretty much breathing their last. I put Tektro brake levers on, Conti Ultra Gatorskins (now with a few hundred miles on them), MKS touring pedals with toe clips, a Cateye MITY8 computer, some fresh bar tape (although, in my first wrapping job, I did a half ass job, plus it's white tape) and added my B17.

Anyway, I was planning on putting it on Craigslist, 400 asking price. I'd probably ask a little more if someone also wanted the B17 (which I have maybe 700 miles on, but it's still got a lot of flex and isn't very broken in - and I followed the care instructions religiously), otherwise I'd put the stock saddle back on that came with the bike.

So question 1 - is 400 a reasonable asking price?

The second thing is, my parents mentioned to someone they know from church that I was looking to sell the bike, and I just emailed him describing the bike (similar to this). I mentioned I was going to put it on craigs for 400 and he offered to buy it sight unseen for that much. This isn't a scam, obviously, since it's someone my folks know (though I don't) but since it is somebody I (sort of) know, and I wasn't expecting to get the full 400 off craigslist, I feel kind of bad selling it to him for that much. Obviously I told him he could and should test ride it first to make sure it's a fit, but even then, assuming it fits, should I go ahead and sell it to him for 400 or be nice and admit that I wasn't expecting to get that much?

$400 is a bit too much for this bike. (Suntour alpha 5000 components, Tange 900/1000 frame). If I were you, I would accept $300 from the church gentleman and call it a day with a clear conscious

$400 would be way high around here. +1 $300 and call it a day.

I think 400 is a bit much but that is not a Alpha 5000 bike. it is a '88 or later with Shimano L A derailleurs. the decals, forkcrown, and frame material decals are different from the Fabulous '87 that was adorned with A 5000

Bike prices in Philly do tend towards higher (especially, of course if it's a neon-colored fixie with three inches of handlebar width) but I still wasn't expecting to get 400. Are the prices you guys are naming the price you'd pay/expect, or price you'd initially ask prior to haggling?

I sold a very similiar Bianchi Forza last year for $200. However the wheels were not as nice as yours and it had an original, low end saddle. Also, I discounted it because I sold it to a freind. If I had listed it on CL, I would have asked $250. Prices have gone up considerably since then. I think the offer of $300 is fair, and about right. I would not accept less.

Parts update: Chainring "Shimano Biopace SIS." Derailers are Exage Sport. Front rim just says "Araya 700c." Rear rim has a sticker saying "'EMR7' Stainless Steel Eyelet. Hard Anodized Treatment 650W." And another that just says "Mavic. Made in France. MA40." Brake calipers also Exage Sport. Downtube shifters say Shimano SIS.

Sticker on downtube reads "Edoardo Bianchi. Campione del Mondo. 1986-87 Colorado Springs."

Dunno if any of that changes anything

it is very nice looking for an '88. I suspect the rear wheel is a replacement, the front sounds original. what kind/model saddle is that?
