Schwinn Collegiate 5 speed
2 Attachment(s)
I have a chance to pick up a 5 speed Schwinn Collegiate today for $35. I was wondering what it's value was. Is it a good bike to flip, or is it collectible. Any help would be appreciated. I have attached pictures. Thanks.

The date code begins with DG which looks to be a 1971

Value depends a lot on location. My area, in very good condition, $125.

I see them advertised around here for anywhere form $50 to $150. It's a popular style, so it should move fairly quickly.

No, its not collectable. As far as flip potential, depends what it needs, and what your expected return would be. Myself, it does not have adequate flip potential to make it worth while.

I went ahead and bought it. It was in totally original condition. Just like it was still 1971. Original paint, brake pads, rims, tires, saddle, etc. The paint is old. One rim does need to be replaced, and back then those Schwinns used a specially sized rim and tires. I was able to find a rim on a Schwinn collector's website, but I have my work cut out for me. But my wife loves it and wants it restored for her. It has emotional attachment. When I was 11, Schwinn was the top bike brand (at least in my world). I saw pictures of Schwinns in Boys Life and longed for them while I rode my Western Auto and Huffy bikes. So, it is kind of cool that I found it and have a chance to restore it for her. I won't flip it, and even though it is not as collectible as a Paramount, or even a mens model, it is worth it to me. Thanks for the help.
