Johnny Kay 531 Reynolds Frame - anyone knows anything about Johnny?

Hi there,
I am looking to build up a British vintage bike and was offered a Johnny Kay frame in 531 Reynolds. The frame is very lightweight and looks pretty elegant. Trouble is, I did not find anything about Johnny Kay, except that he had a bike shop up in Lancashire, UK, in the 60ths. What do you know about him, is that a good frame maker, or just one of the millions who had a go at making their own frame?
Thanks for your help.

Viscount (Sadly no longer on the Forum) bought this 1959 model from its original owner and even received photos of the bike and previous owner at an exhibition at Earl's Court in London. Sorry not much more to add.

Thanks, I did find the Viscount article but the links are dead, may be it's to long ago. Well, I just keep looking around if I find any more references. On a side note, I like your personal quote, there is some truth in it, you know.

I owned a Johnny Kay frame many years ago. (in the seventies) and it was a well built frame in Reynolds 531 stell tubing with fancy chromed lug work, chromed 1/3 forks, and campagnolo fork ends. There was a frame sticker saying the frame was made in Rawtenstall in Lancashire UK.
I have never seen another Johnny Kay frame - can you post a picture of yours?
If I only knew they were so rare.......... I would not have sold it !!

Hi I am Johnny kays son and i am desperate to locate one of his frames. If you have any info could you please pass it on. Many thanks.
PS he was an excellent frame maker and i still won many trophies on his bikes. Including 12 and 24 hour races.
Regards Gerald john Kay

Hi Gerald,
The frame was at a little shop in East London. Address and Telephone at https://sargentandco.com. Not to discourage you, but this was 9 month ago and the frame may have been sold by now. Anyway, worth a call.
Regards
Frank

Johnny Kay Bike

Dear All, I have just been given a green framed beautifully crafted "Johnny Kay" embossed bike. It has Crome stay and forks although the shine has deminished somewhat.
As far as I can make out it has:
Campag Gran Sport 5 speed rear mech,Mafac brakes and levers,Stronglight cranks, RH Mires handlebars, Titan stem, and a Gerald G Kay, Rossenden, England coat of arms stamp.
The serial number is 59'3064'022 E88 stamped lengthways along the BB and 1672 widthways. The last owner had it 64 years from second hand. Not sure how much is original but I suspect all but the centre pull brakes?
Hope this is of use to any of family. Regards, Bob.

Gerald,

Do you have any frames or are you just looking for more? I can't imagine the tragedy that must've happened to not have a single Kay frame, as he was your father. Just curious.

Gerald Kay Master bike

Hi Gerald,
I've been given what looks to be a Metallic Master frame with Gerald Kay head and seat tube badge, stating made in Rossensdale. The previous owner thinks they bought around 1958 Its 531 with nervex lugs.
I'm near Manchester and I'd love for it to go to a good home.

Regards
Richard
