Miyata 721A ... opinions please!
I have been endlessly searching the criagslists ads in my area for a good vintage bike that would serve as a commuter to and back from school. Finally, I located a good looking bike in excellent condition. Its a 1990 721A Miyata, I was going to talk the guy down to $125, but the condition of the bike was nice enough that I paid him $150. He was originally asking $200.
Now, I do not know much about the bike, but after a brief test ride I was convinced that it performed well and had adequate stopping power. There was a terrible shadow being cast by the afternoon sun and I couldn't wait till tomorrow. So if this violates any BF rules I apologize.
What are some of the things I "should" change? This bike will be ridden to a local JC on a daily basis and if I plan to change anything, it should not attract thieves attention.

Opinions and suggestions appreciated. What is the purpose of the thread on the bottom of the down tube, picture below.

That Miyata looks to be in pristine condition. As far as I know the Miyata 721A was kind of a high end sports tourer. It has a tripple crank, 7 speed indexed Exage 500 LX system with the long cage RD, dual pivot brakes and also eyelets for racks. I guess the only knock on the 721A is that it is bonded aluminum, that being said it is from later in the bonded game, so by this time I think the issues with earlier bonded aluminum have been worked out. For $150 you did great! Here in Toronto I easily could have got $350 for that bike in that condition. I sold a Miyata 110 that was two years older and in slightly worse condition for $250 (asked and taken) with multiple offers streaming in. Great find! Enjoy and be careful where you leave it. It's thief bait for sure
!
edit: If it were me I would find a bit more of a beater to lock up at JC

Bad news, around here, that bike would be attracting thieves attention as it sits.
Sweet bike, easy $275 around here in an average market, over $300 + in one of those hotter markets. I am surprised it has Exage on it. Earlier 7xx series Miyatas were 105.
Tip: for pictures here, take them from the drive side (the side where the chain is). That's where all of the action is on the bike.
