1980 Raleigh Competition GS, Cherry

I will admit, I am an addict on these Raleigh Competitions, and if I ever get lucky , going to try to land me a Professional too. I got two Competitions and getting ready to get another one, it is cherry too.

Now, all of a sudden, the 78 to 80 Competitions are popping up from everywhere. I can get them all.
Here is one I just saw on Ebay. If I had not put in for the cherry 78 that I should be getting around Friday or Saturday, I would buy this one in a heartbeat. I think it is the last ones they made in England, and it is cherry too.

Just found out that seller had to pull this out of the auction, the reason was, he misrepresented the bike as being made in ENGLAND. Which is was NOT. It was made in JAPAN..

However, Life goes on...

Interesting. I'm a painting contractor and for a while I was running into quite a few of them in clients basements and garages. Seemed to be the bike of choice for a lot of law students. And once into their careers, the bikes were hung up not to be ridden again. All the ones I've come across are black. Makes sense that these are coming out of the woodwork as the age of the persons who bought these are, well my age, and realize they wont be riding them. Just one example of the original buyers of the Competition. Though there seems to be more pristine examples of Comps than of other bikes of similiar vintage.

Hey Frank, I know they are sweet!! I got two 78 Raleigh Competions, and an 85 Competition.. I would have go the one that I posted about, but I opted for another 78 competion GS. I see you modded the gear shifts, what other mods you done to yours?

I am putting on SPD-SL pedals on two of my Competitions.. and see how that works...

Again, those Competions just make me drool!! I am a sucker for them...

Mine is the way I found it. I don't think it was ridden much (if any) prior my my finding it. In fact, in these photos it hadn't even been washed yet. When I originally posted pictures someone suggested in was a 1980 model based on the spec. The frame numbers say 1976.

I found a 76 super course I am thinking about also. I too would love to find Professional also..

I have an early to mid-80s Super Course that has been hanging around in the garage unridden for years, in great condition. I cleaned it up a few months ago, and it rides like a dream. Everything is original. I haven't decided whether to keep it or sell it, as I have other bikes. Any idea of a reasonable value on it?
