Schwinn World Sport for $180 - worth it?

I know almost nothing about bikes, but I need a commuter as I just moved to Portland.

"For men approx. 5'10" to 6'4" Completely overhauled.
Schwinn world sport. Very good original paint.
New tubes and tires, new cables, new brake pads.
New bar wrap is available in several colors. "

Thanks in advance.

if it's your size and has a cromoly frame - go ride it

It is my size, but how do I tell if it is a cromoly frame?

it will say so in a sticker - look at the decals on the frame. I'm pretty sure that model was cromoly for a long time. (that means it's lighter than the older steel bikes)

looks like it's in good shape but you might have to work on it. check how the wheels spin - you can always pay to get them trued but it's best to have run true right off the bat

That is NOT the cromoly version, and is not worth $180. Cromoly version came out in 1984 and came with alloy rims, not the steel ones in that picture, along with a better crankset. The bike in OP is a $100 bike, and really there are much better options.

That appears to be a 1982 model. Bottom of the line imported Schwinn weighs in at 34 pounds. 1984 weighed in at 29 pounds (not light weight either, but FIVE pounds is a lot on a bike).

If you want an inexpensive commuter bike, you would be a lot better off getting a 1990s rigid frame MTB: lighter weight, better gearing, aluminum rims, better brakes, better frame, can easily take fenders and racks, a lot more choices for tires, the list goes on and on.

If you want a racing/road bike, then draw the line at a cromoly frame and alloy rims. The harder you look, the better deal you will find.

This is what a 1984 looked like in a smaller size (I had this one last year):

That looks exactly like mine except for the chrome tipped fork. Looks like it may be a replacement fork to me, looks slightly different color. Also rear derailer is not original. I hope I can clean mine up good enough to get $100 for it.

+1 on what wrk101 said. Not worth $180, you can do alot better for that price. There are some late 80s WSs that were considerably more worthy with forged drops, integrated hanger, alloy wheels, hubs, cranks and 4130 frame that can be worth that price if they're in great shape, but this is not one of them.

definitley not. i had two (schwinn world and schwinn sprint) and they are decent riding bikes. i have one set up as my fixed gear/bad weather bike, and while i love it, i know its cheap. i love that i can lock it up and not really worry about it. I have completely rebuilt mine, and it has a lot of sentimental value, but as far as selling it, i won't.
