Raleigh Sovereign

Hi there, I know someone posted about a Sovereign 2 years ago but I just came across one and Its in really good condition with some very minor rust in sockets and minor scratches. I was wondering what I could fetch for it.

I know the price quoted on here previously was something like $20-$50 but I have also seen it listen on places like craigslist for $75 and at time $150. Just wondering what something like mine would go for since I wasn't able to see the condition of the previous on since the picture links were broken.

Also if there is any way I could find out more about the bike such as year etc that would be great.

Hi Air Ricco -
You have a mid-eighties Raleigh, probably made in Taiwan.
It was positioned just above the bottom-end Record, and below the Olympian, which was below the Grand Prix.
- As such, it is not worth a lot of money.
All cleaned up, with new tires, cables, housings, chain, tape and bearings etc, it would go for about $140 around here.
- As is, I would say about $50-70. (steel wheels really hold down value).


PS - If the seat post is stuck it is virtually valueless. (It is always disconcerting to see a seat post set all the way in like that )

Thanks so much for the info I've been cleaning up the bike, polishing etc to get rid of some of the small scratches in the paint and will look into some new wheels although since I'm not really looking for resale and the fact that everything on it is in really great condition with all original parts I might just keep it as is since I am also rebuilding a Schwinn Varsity.

The seat post is actually not stuck thats just how it was when I got the bike, the pictures were taken right after purchase and I've already traded out the saddle and put my Brooks on it.

Hi AirRicco -

If you are going to keep it , spring for the aluminum wheel set (I believe your bike requires 27 inchers, and used 27's are sometimes available used in good condition because some people "upgrade" to 700c) -or brand new, they'll set you back about $80
- Either way its worth it for a keeper, since the weight/ride and braking will improve a great deal. Do make sure the one you get is specific for a screw-on freewheel, not the modern cassette hub.

You probably already know this if you are re-building your Schwinn, so forgive me for restating, but if you buy used, make sure you replace the wheel hub bearings and grease. You will also need the correct freewheel puller to remove the FW from your old wheel.
While you're at it, you should do the crank bottom bracket bearings as well.
The Park Tool website describes what you need for all these repairs, and the tools will cost you no more than what a bike shop would charge for service so I suggest you DIY.

In summary, I am sure you can look forward to having a very nice looking/riding and bike with this Raleigh! It will look great with your Brooks too.
