Bought this Giant bike at a garage sale for $10. Whats it worth
Hello. I posted once before about the Bianch I bought at a garage sale for 50 to see what it was worth. LINK HERE
So, today I was at a garage sale to pick up a washer for our new place and casually asked the lady if her mountain bike was for sale. She said "yes, yes, but I have loads more downstairs, would you like to see" So I went down and she was showing me her beach cruisers, cannondale mountain bike, GT mountain bike with front suspension, and then this... This Giant road bike. If you read my previous post, I stated that I know nothing about bikes besides the $100 Huffy I used to ride when I was younger (but I was looking to get into road biking). However, at first glace, I was able to tell that the Giant was a good bike. Then, when I picked it up(carbon fiber), I was sold. I was just about the ask her the price, then she stated that they were moving to Hawaii and she just wanted to get rid of them ASAP and priced them all at $10 each. I was shocked, and quickly gave her the cash and put it in my car and drove off because I was afraid she would change her mind. She was aware that it was a nice bike though, as she was saying something like, "yeah, the frame is really nice, I mean really nice. Oh, and also the pedals, those are really good" etc
Anyways, here it is. It was quite rusty and dusty, so I cleaned it up and sprayed some wd40 on the chain and gears (14 gears btw). Anyone have any idea of how much this bike is worth right now. I am just curious. I will most probably keep it for myself and sell the bianchi (what do you guys think). Also, any idea of how much these sold for when they were new (prob early 90s).
The bike weights roughly 20lb
Thanks in advance. Lemme know if you have any questions or want more photos

$100 in current state, $225 all rehabbed and ready to go (and everything Shimano 105). Some of the rusty parts would need to be replaced. So more than just a quick flip.
That Cannondale MTB would make a good grab well. I usually avoid MTBs, but Cannondales have a following.
I've got one just like it.

$225 seems like a good estimate to me too. They wanted $280 for this similarly equipped older CF bike around here:

Replace the screws on the brakes, the rear derailleur, all of the cables, and the tires if needed. Might want to see if you can replace the spindles on the pedals too. You should be able to find a 105 7 speed compatible derailleur on ebay pretty cheap.
But I wouldn't sell it if I were you. I'd fix it up for myself (as long as it fit).

Yup, I was thinking of keeping it for myself as well after I make sure it works fine (still need to inflate tires, etc)
If it went my way, I would have bought most of those bikes, but didnt have room in my car as it already had a washer in it. I ended up going back and got a Proflex 855 mountain bike for $25 just 20 minutes ago. I will clean it a little and post pictures. It seems like a really solid bike as well. This way, I could have a solid road bike and a solid mountain bike and get rid of everything else (cannondale from previous post, and the bianchi)
Any idea on how much this road bike cost originally?
thanks

by the way, don't spray wd-40 on the chain, it's bad for it, buy some chain lube from a bike store or so.
wd-40 on chain = bad

The actual item I used was titled "Lubracant" and it is a spray. However, it was next to the WD40 in the store and smells the same, so Im assuming it is the generic version of WD40
How is WD40 bad for the chain? I am assuming that it is because the wd40 strips away the existing lube on a chain which is more suitable for the movements of a bike...however this bikes chain was completely orange and stiff when I bought it so there was no lube left on it to begin with.

The issues about WD40 have been discussed endlessly over in the mechanics forum. Do a search, and you will get more info than you ever wanted to see for sure.

Not bad at all for $10. Since you said your bike knowledge is low I would highly recommend having that frame looked over carefully at a LBS that knows carbon fiber. Unlike steel or aluminum CF gives you pretty much zero warning before catastrophic failure. I would spend the extra money for the piece of mind.
It's hard to tell if that is a surface scratch, smudge or a crack running through the "C" there.

That's an outstanding buy for $10. I miss going to garage sales. I need to move my Saturday morning ride to another time.

With all that rust you'd think the bike already lived in HI. Where'd you get it? Astoria or Ilwaco by any chance? I'd be interested in seeing the other bikes if they're going for those kinda prices.

Before you get too worried about the WD40 on the chain, all you really need to know is that it isn't a good long term solution. No big deal in a pinch. When you're cleaning the whole thing top to bottom, I would just degrease the chain and then use a little bit of Tri-flow.

Thanks, thats exactly what my thinking was.
Anyways, here are the pictures of the other bike I bought. Anyone have a idea about its worth? Is it a good bike? Also, I have never seen this type of rear suspension system, its some type of spongy material. Does this type of thing need replacing? as it does look old now.
Thanks

Is that a Rock Shox Indy C on the front? I think that might be spring and not elastomer, says they came out in 1996.

Just wanted to throw my 2 cents in on a few things. The WD-40 issue has been discussed, but I wanted to clarify something with that. WD-40 is a moisture-wicking spray, that is to say, it's meant to draw out moisture, NOT add it. With that said, WD-40 is NOT a lubricant as most people would be lead to believe. The other thing, judging from your pics, alot of that "rust" is minimal and wanted to let you know the best thing for removing it as replacing every little rusted things on bikes can get pricey. Steel wool (Brillo is the brand that I use), commonly found in the grocery store where the Ajax and Comet cleanser aisle is....this works great on surface rust. Just make sure it's very fine and you don't push too hard with it. Also, if the metal you're using it on is a softer metal, just barely brush over it with steel wool or you risk scratching swirls into it. Hope this helps.

WD-40 on a chain isn't bad, as long as you don't regard it as a lubricant. WD-40 on a chain makes a good solvent for removing old lubricants. Let it drip for 15 minutes, then wipe it with a clean dry cloth, then re-lube with proper chain lube.

I think the Giant predates bikepedia (only goes back to 93) but here is there 1993 CF road bike. though it is considerably nicer with 8 speed Ultegra STI group.
