I have my father in law's 1980 Competition GS and I am trying to find a good home for it. He is an engineer and meticulous by nature so to say he babied this bike would be a understatement. I am fairly certain it is a 25 1/2 inch frame. All parts on the bike are original except for possibly the saddle.

I am trying to find out what a fair value is for this bike. We are more interested in selling it to someone who would appreciate it, restore it, and ride it rather than make a big profit.

Nice bike. Cleaned up it is certainly worth $300-$400 to someone. If you successfully find someone who is really interested in restoring it (sorry, but I go
for a 21 inch frame) you probably are looking at $200. Having an all 531 frame with butted main tubes is a big asset. The Campy components are not
top of the line - they make it a bit more desirable. Earlier examples bring more money I believe.

Mind you I am fairly cheap and I miss the mark a lot.

Depends where you live and your marketing ability. It is a project right now, and projects tend to sell cheap, really cheap. All cleaned up and ready to go, it would be a sweet bike.

Hmmm, might just be my eyes this morning, but check the upper fork legs angle relative to the headtube angle. Might be okay due to the frame size, but something many of us watch out for, and it could just be the camera angle. Otherwise looks like a decent bike for someone looking for that size. Around my market it wouldn't get much right now though. You'd do better in the big city 50 miles south of here.




The OP has one post so far, I wonder if they'll come back and at least tell us what part of the world they are in.

+1 I was going to mention bent fork myself. Put a straight edge on it, centered on the stem, through the headset and fork crown. It if is not bent, it should look something like this:

To the OP, I would love to have the 80 Comp GS, that will make me have three BLACK Competition GS from England. However, it is about 2 to 3 cm to big...

Actually, the picture is my 1987 Prologue. The bar tape is the red Nashbar branded stuff. I buy it when it goes on sale, earlier this year they had it down to $4 per bike (their regular price is $10, but it is frequently on sale for $6 or less).

It does appear to be slightly bent, shouldn't make a massive difference in the ride but it will affect value.

I rode with a much more badly bent fork for a couple years and the bike was a little twitchy but it certainly never killed me, not even a little bit.

Bent. But not by much, would likely be an easy fix.

+1. You should also check the the frame tubes just behind the head tube. Sometimes a front-end collision will damage them. Feel the bottom of both the top (horizontal) tube and the down (sloping) tube, just behind the head tube lugs to see if they are rippled. You can also look for paint cracking in the same areas. Also check the steering to see if it's at all tight. The alignment between the top and bottom bearings can get out of plane if the steer tube is bent and this can cause the steering to bind.

It's still a nice bike - and just my size . Good luck with it. It doesn't look like serious damage but it does look bent.
