any idea on the value? Is it worth me spending the time to restore? should I try to find a period rear wheel to replace the bad freewheel or just replace the set with something that looks similar/

I can't speak to it value wise but they ride beautifully, If it fits you I'd fix it up and ride it.

+1 regarding the identification. It was the bottom model in Peugeot's racing line. Despite the HLE tubing it is still fairly light and should come in about 25 lbs.
It's equipped mostly with plain but functional components. The area of concern iss the wheelset. While it has aluminum rims they are the old, 27" versus the more popular 700C. That's not a real big deal, but the Helicomatic rear hub may be. It's equipped with a relatively narrow range (13-26T) cogset. If the gearing is too narrow and/or the cogs or cones are worn out, it may mean replacing the wheelest, as Helicomatic replacements are getting harder and expensive to come by.

Depends who does the work. As is, bike is only worth about $50 to $75. Bike is a project right now. Do you have the time/tools/aptitude/space/interest in doing all the work yourself? Paying someone to refurbish it for you will likely exceed the value of the bike when finished ($175). Finished = all cleaned up, new cables, bearings, grease, remove rust from components, etc. As to the freewheel, would you rather spend $10 or $50? Six speed freewheels are readily available. Niagara has a six speed Shimano freewheel on sale right now for $6.

It sounds like you may have just paid $5.00 for a stolen bicycle. The guy with the $5.00 may be the one who's laughing right now. Buying a bicycle, with cash, on the street, from someone you don't know is a tenuous situation.

Considering this guy buys his s-works bikes from us and rides 6-7 thousand miles a year between his road bike and mountain bike, im not sure that was the situation. hed be an odd guy for it to happen from. from the outside I can see what you mean, but in this situation, not the case.

Five dollars and two dollars -- I love these stories. I bought my Peugeot from the Goodwill for $15 plus $1.65 "shipping" and tax -- it was pickup only. Great bike.

darb85, that's a nice score. Even it was bottom end racing model for Peugeot, it still rides very lively and entertaining. I had one last year and I was impress by the handling. Hope you enjoy it.
