Lotus Bike?

So, my aunt was over for the holidays, and offered me my Deceased uncle's old "race bike." She's not a cyclist, and was pretty scarce on the details but here's all I know thus far:

Late 70s
Lotus
Steel frame

Did lotus actually make road bikes back then? Or is it a decent brand simply repainted? Or is it something like one of those "Jeep" or "hummer" mountain bikes they sell at sharper image?

I'll take pictures as soon as I can, but any initial impressions would be great. I'm a bit taller than my uncle was, and I think it could be a fun side project to restore. At the very worst, it won't fit me, I'll have fun tinkering with it, and I could give it to my cousin, who is pretty much exactly his Dad's size, and recently getting back into cycling after a long hiatus from the sport. (He has 4 kids and totally wouldn't have the time for a project like this on his own, but I think it could be a really nice gift)

I know for sure that Lotus was a bike company with no affiliation to the car company. A minimal amount of time on google will probably answer a lot of questions.

Google Lotus road bike. Lotus bikes are no different than many other Japanese bike boom bikes in that they had a range of quality. I would say from what I've seen, even the lower end is very nice. I was in Evansville Indiana on business recently and stopped in a bike shop there. One of the employees had his bike in the back and offered to show it to me. It was a Lotus and had Tange Infinity tubing and Shimano 600 components. It was very nice indeed.

Post a picture so that we can see it. If it is late '70s there is a good chance that it will have Suntour components. When we know what model of component we can nail it down further, or you can look up the serial number on Velobase.com and check out the vintage there.

+1, Lotus offered a wide range of well designed and manufactured models form entry uo to professional level. They offered very good value and won a number of Consumer Reports awards. Lotus was a USA brand with most of the 1970s and early 1980s models being manufactured in Japn by Tsunoda. They were very popular in the mid-1980s. Late 1970s models are quite rare.

I'm sorry for your loss, but congrats on the Lotus - sounds promising. I've never seen one with anything less than lower-end Tange. My roommate has one with Columbus and Cyclone MK II that is gorgeous but 3cm too petite for me. Can't wait to see pictures!
