Just aquired a run down Dawes Galaxy in a very poor condition- although it is worth restoring. Problem is that I do not know the age. There are a couple of numbers under the BB that read 58------63 and it is made of 531 tubing. Appears to have had suntour running gear originally although many parts have been changed over the years

In general- the frame- bars and brakes appear in good condition. Wheels- crankset and Cabling need replacing so it looks like it is worth getting back into ride condition.

Any one any idea on the age so I can then get back to somewhere near OM spec?

I don't think turkey (brake "safety") levers appeared until the early 70's. Do the wheels match? If so, then I would try to date the bike with them. What brand of hubs? If Normandy or Maillard, just look for a 2 digit code that would represent the last 2 digits of the year.

Wheels do not match and it will be up for new wheels. Rear is steel but Badly corroded and front was a replacement alloy.

Had another estimate of 1976--- +or- 2 years so it looks as though I will have to look for a few date marks on components to get an idea of date.

Once I get a year- then I will investigate putting it back to OM condition- with a couple of changes like Alloy rims.
