Early Dawes mountain bike 1980s? "Countryman"

Hiya, I just picked this up to fix up for a friend who is new to cycling. I think it is a lovely bike, and got it because of the Reynolds 531 frame. It's in the shop now getting a service including new tires, brake pads, and cables.

While Dawes Galaxies and various of their hybrids are very popular over here, this "Countryman" is a model I have never heard of. It appears to be an early mountain bike. It even has padding inside the triangle to hoist it onto your shoulder! The components suggest 1980s to me, with Weinman brakes, Suntour derailleur, etc. It has quite wide 26" wheels, and will be fitting Marathons to them.

I am spending about £50 fixing it up. My mechanic said the frame has a long wheelbase, something I hadn't noticed. There's no toe overlap so if my friend doesn't like it, it will suit me! I had a look around online and haven't seen another like this. I hope my friend likes it, as it is a birthday present surprise.

That certainly is an intriguing MTB. I have never seen one quite like it.
- Obviously it was a pretty serious effort in its day, with decent components and a really decent frame!

If you haven't already, check the Trek website for component data codes: Your Suntour DR at least should be dated.

Thank you for your take on the bike. I agree, "intriguing" describes it well. Thanks also for the suggestion about checking the Trek website. Once it is home from the shop I will do some detective work!

I went to look at a Dawes Galaxy today, early to mid-80s probably, with DT shifters. Nice bike and all. . . but wasn't a patch on this Countryman!

The more I look at it, the more the term "Clydesdale" comes to mind!
