Trying to verify my Cannondale model.
Hope this is the appropriate subtopic. . .
Anyway:
I called Cannondale back in, I guess 1996, and gave them the "serial" number from the chainstay.
The nice lady on the other end said, I think, 1988 R800. And I've basically been saying that's what it is for the last 15 years.
Firstly, let me get this straight: all the road frames from this era are the same, the only difference is the components?
"OK, so, why are you bothering us, then," you might be thinking. Well, it's only recently that I decided to fix her back up and take her out. . maybe chase some puppies. Anyway, I became interested in documenting exactly what was on the bike as well as verifying that my memory of this being an R800 was correct.
S/N: 56092486005 (56cm, Sept 9, 1986, sequence 005)
Component Details (that have not been replaced since obtaining):
Suntour Cyclone (6000) Shifters and derailleurs.
Crankset is Sugino SLP 52/42 / Sakae SX (left) (170mm)
Seatpost is Sugino SP-K
Rear hub is Miche Competition.
Frame Details
The frame is completely black.
The Cannondale logo (name) is on the toptube-- black with silver border (or maybe clear with silver border).
The famous Cannondale leaning against a house on the head tube.
No other markings or decals.

You sure about the 88? The decals look like earlier years, like 1985/1986.
Here are the catalogs to flip through. Take a look at the 1985 SR300.

I think there may have been a touring model with cantilever bosses but otherwise I think all the road frames were the same.
do you have some good pics of the rear hub? especially showing both stampings?

Well, you have a Trek stem on that bike, and the fork is either not original.
Cannondale serial numbers are great, your bike is a 09-24-88 manufacture date (slight change from the OP, very slight).
1988 SR500.
It would take quite a bit to return it to all original.
1989 had a much different frame (with the cantilevered rear dropouts), and the decals would be different as well.

Ah. Damn. You're right. It's a 6 not an 8.

It's an SR frame, if it's an '86 then check out the Vintage Canondale site and see what parts might have been original to it. There are definitely some replacements on there (fork, stem, etc.)

Under several times magnification, I was able to discern it is a Miche Competition. My eyes suck. I suck. It's a pretty good imitation, though. I think someone must have put a decal or something on there or something. Yeah. Lets go with that.

I remember what I traded for it. . A blue and white Centurion Ironman (the cheapest one). I'm not sure if I got a good deal or not.
